So I was packing up stuff for Hershey at my buddy's place and I found these two finned coils in one of his semi-trailers full of stuff. I already had the bee-hive one on top but I've never seen these other ones with the vertical fins. They say Delco-Remy on them, are they stock in anything? Anyone ever see one before? Got a funny looking mirror thrown in on the deal too, aftermarket?
Bruce Lancaster sent me the shell of one of the vertical finned ones. Idea was to drop in a new coil and bolt it to the firewall. Don't know about being stock in anything, but they look cool.
Yeah, they're 12 volt, so they almost gotta be 1955 or newer, but it has the old style Delco-Remy lettering on it. I wonder what they were originally for? And do you really think the aluminum fins would cool the thing off? seems like that would just insulate it further. They are pretty stylin' for a coil, though.
you should send one to me for furthur study cool lookin to say the least... but if the aluminum case is tight to the body of the coil, i do think the fins would act as a heat sink, not insulate. it'd only insulate if there is a tiny air gap between the actual coil and the aluminum case
That's a good point. Grimlock, you should keep that in mind when you get a replacement coil for yours. Shows a model number 1115256 anyone got a parts book?
I was a little leary of a 45 year old coil so I cut the metal band at the top, turned it upside down and warmed it with a torch until the tar melted and the whole mess fell out into a bucket (it makes a big mess if you don't catch it in something). An aftermarket coil is smaller than the hole leaving an air gap. I needed to know how much epoxy to use to just fill the gap and not over flow on the fins. I filled the housing with water, slipped in the coil letting the water over flow. I carefully removed the coil and marked the new water level inside the housing. After drying it I mixed up some 2 part liquid epoxy and filled the housing with it up to my mark. When I slipped the coil in the epoxy came right up to the rim and stopped. It's been like that for about 10 years. The epoxy may not be a great heat conductor but it's got to be better than an air gap. Some of the horizontal finned coils came with a rubber boot to water proof the connections.
I had one like that on a hot rod a few years ago. I was looking for another one for the modified and was told they are 56 Ford?
Well here,s my little collection. 6 volt & 12 volt Delco Remy, a 6 volt blue streak , 6volt jumbo size thing & 12 volt American Bosch (the red one ) Heavy little things.
Wow... looks like these things arent TOO overly rare. i think im gonna be keepin my eyes peeled for one from now on,,, Cool lookin pieces 34 GAZ, specialy the blue streak, like the color and the tag on the side
They were selling these brand new at the LA Roadster show this year.....kind of pricey....but they say they'll out last anything else you'll buy new....or used for that matter...
I can't remember off hand...........couldn't have been too bad though...I was tempted to buy one........even considered being a dealer here in the great SW...... they included their own studs protruding from the side that made mounting on a firewall or engine bracket a piece of cake
ooo owie,,, $179 a copy for these things...outta my price range but still a kool item. found the website. this link takes you to the products page. they make 4 different ones. Astrocoil products page
