To me, the best part of any event is about hanging out with friends. Driving is a close second. Reliability runs combine both of those. Today was the 3rd (?) annual Northern California Reliability Run, put on by Redbeard (Dave Bautista) of the Lucky *******s. I missed the first two because of work, but was lucky enough to make this one.

Since I don't have a pre-'41 vehicle that is road worthy, I jumped in with Matt Seret in the Seret Customs van and we followed along as a support vehicle.

The festivities actually started the night before, but Matt and I missed them and drove up to Petaluma early this morning. Hopefully someone will add photos from last night.

The morning started out perfect - a chill in the air, the sun coming up, and the sound of vintage mills getting closer to the parking lot where we were set to meet. Dave and Marissa had donuts and coffee waiting for the participants, and everyone was stoked for the day of 150+ miles that lay ahead.

When it was time, directions were handed out and we hit the road. Matt, the Fonz, a bullhorn, and I waited until everyone was out of the parking lot and began the "chase". We didn't get far before we started to **** off and had to stop for a photo of a shark car we spied on the side of the road. This detour put us somewhat behind, but we figured we'd catch up.

It would be a while before we did because we got mixed up after about the fourth direction on the list. We got it sorted and sped to catch the pack, and ended up doing so in Point Reyes, about 40 miles down the road. The rest of the participants had stopped for gas and to regroup.

When the wagon train was started again, Dave led the way, but many got separated because of the way the traffic flow was set up. We left last, and went the way that we thought the group headed.

Just a few miles outside of town we came upon a few guys on the side of the road. We had been trying to figure out if we were going the right way, and so were they. None of the roads on our list seemed right. Maybe we were all just dumb. We headed back to town to retrace our steps.

Back in town we still couldn't find any of the roads listed in the directions. What the ****!? We drove in circles through the small town for another 15 minutes before we saw a large portion of the guys coming back into town too. We all congregated back at the gas station where we'd all just left from.

We got Dave on the phone after several tries and figured out that our direction packs were missing two pages! Now, normal people might be pissed, but none of us cared at all. We were hanging out, driving with a bunch of buddies. No one gave a ****.

We decided to just head straight to the scheduled lunch stop and wait for the other half of the group to arrive. All of us "lost boys" had a nice lunch and chilled out while we waited on the rest of the guys. Sometimes it's great just to sit and do nothing.

When Dave arrived with the group he was apologizing for the directions mixup, but we made it clear that we didn't care at all. Besides, it makes for a funny story.

When lunch was over the group struggled to get moving again, but hit the road for the final stop in Bodega Bay.

Soon after we started again, Matt and I bailed out because Matt needed to get home to hang out with his daughter and take her to ride her new bike. I came home and started to be a computer nerd and loaded my pics and wrote this garbage.

Hopefully everyone made the rest of the trip.

HUGE thanks to Dave for planning this whole thing out. The scenery was AMAZING and the company was even better!!!! Way to go Dave!!!!

Post pics if ya got 'em!!!!

Cool, we had a great time. We bugged out in Fairfax after getting lost for a while, then finding the pack again. Just walked in the door from our 200 mile ride home.

Those are the best pictures ever. I'm so jealous - I want to move west just to be close to the fun.

  14. After burning up yesterday in Hotlanta at Dixie Fried, I'm really jealous of an event in August where the folks have to wear jackets and coats.
Great cars, super event, we gotta do one in North Georgia this fall.

Wow!!! I can't believe I missed the First and Second Reliability Run....Today was AMAZING!!!

First off, I have to thank Dave (Redbeard) and his lovely lady Marissa for all the hard work they put in to planning the route for this outing. I've lived in the Bay Area all my life and today we covered areas I never new existed.

Unfortunately I didn't have a Hot Rod to drive on this run but I still had an amazing time.

I've been going to car shows for many years, but the King show for me was always Paso Robles. But after going to Paso for many years I began to realize that the show was great but the part about the weekend that excited me the most was the drive down with my friends........

Well today, in my opinion, the Reliability Run over through the King and took the Crown as the BEST Hot Rod event on the West Coast. It is by FAR the best!!!! Great people, Great Cars, Great Views, Great Laughs. It was truly more than a drive, it was an adventure. Seeing amazing Hot Rods that were built with Blood and Sweat ripping down Highway 1 and lonely country backroads was priceless!!!

Only thing that could of made today better was if after driving all day we stayed at a coastal Hotel, drank beers and left in the morning....

Thanks again Dave and Marissa for an amazing time!!!

    Regards,
    Big Dirty

I'll Email you a couple good pics to post later.

How far did you guys go between gas stops.

I just ran a potential path for a similar run up here in the NW today.. only problem is the distance between gas fill ups. but not sure what is the appropriate distance between gas fill ups. Its out in the wilderness and very scenic but about 120 miles between gas stations

What distance can most guys run on a tank
