i have been thinking of what trans. i want to put in my coronet and read an artical on the mopar A-833. i tried to do a search on here for anything on it and came up short, so my questions to yall is: what is yall's opinion on that trans. with the 3rd and 4rth gear ratio's changed so that 4rth is an over drive? im running a 241 hemi, so the issue of too much power is not aparent. another question is if there is an adaptor plate for this set up, or if you just have a completely diffrent sugestion for a better trans. selection? jonmichael
I run an 833 O/D behind my blown 354 hemi and it works great. I run a 50's Dodge bellhousing, a homemade trans adapter plate (for the bolt pattern) and the A833 O/D trans. The bearing retainer was the same size as the hole in the bell so the adapter is just to bolt the trans up to the bell. I've got a 146 tooth Weber steel faced aluminum flywheel. Nice piece. The one trick with this setup is the bell does not allow the normal auto starter to be used because the solenoid won't clear the block. I use an industrial engine starter that has the solenoid mounted on the other side. I've been trying to break it for a while but it's holding up well.
yeha i read on there that the counter shaft does not have a bushing or anything, its a steel chaft on the alum. housing, so under high HP set ups it will tend to fai, but for that kind of power im looking at it should do fine. is the shift from 2nd to 3rd alright, i have a feeling that it would be a little hard for my engine but im sure its fine for yours? iv never had to make an adaptor before, so ill have to look into how to make one, unless you know where i would be able to get one?
I've got a picture around here somewhere. I'll find it. They are a little more rare and a lot heavier but I'm using a cast case instead of the aluminum. That countershaft isn't going anywhere.
yeah i was going to try and find the cast case bc of that reason. but like i said, im not worried about too much power. i think ill get one and go from there, if you come across one, give me a shout if you could please. thanks for the help.
Hot Heads makes a adapter kit, a bit pricey but works. http://www.hothemiheads.com/transmission_adapters/hemi_mopar_manual.html
I have about the EXACT set up Kerry does behind my Built DeSoto. My A~833 is an Iron case.. But i also have an aluminum spare.. Cant break the one it it as of yet ! Easy adaption on mine using a '55 Dodge truck bell housing of a Poly Motor, Very slick due to the Intregal Clutch Fork assy for ease of Linkage fabrication. Why Spend HOT HEADS Kinda $$ when it can be done so cheap by yourself or your Metal Fab Friends ??
DE SOTO- i agree with you about not paying HotHeads. i baught engine parts from them for my hemi, natauarlly, and it was a little raping. but for this, i grew up working in a local machine shop/fab shop so i can cruise over there and see what we can cook up for a plate. are you running the overdrive convertion?
FYI - from my experience I have found that the OD A-833's with a cast iron case are usually from pickups, where the aluminum case OD A-833 transmissions seem to be from cars.
