I believe this association issued the car registration at Island Dragway. I have my registration card from 1960. It could have been the guys at Old Bridge Raceway when they had drag racing there, such as it was, but I bet it was Island.

All I did was put "New Jersey Timing Association" into Google and I found an article on Hemmings' site about Old Bridge Speedway. Here's one paragraph:

The principals were Art Grotyohann and Fred Schulz, a degreed chemist and electrical engineer, respectively, who liked fast cars, and in the middle 1950s or thereabouts, founded the New Jersey Timing Association. It held its first meet at an abandoned airfield in Woodbine, not far from Cape May, before settling on Old Bridge as its home, where it remained for the duration of its existence.

You can find the article if you put "New Jersey Timing Association" into Google.

  5. My old club, Motormounts of Maplewood used to go to Woodbine before I joined. I believe they helped with tech inspection. Later I ran my '56 Chevy gasser at Old Bridge.
We used to go to meetings of a group clubs in North Jersey who were trying to get a place to race along with getting better PR for hot rodders. My memory is very fuzzy on these meetings as I only went to one and was 16 at the time.
Bruce Lancaster & I were talking last week about starting a thread about the original clubs including the Squires of Chatham and the Drivin Deuces. There were lots of them, so how bout all you old North Jersey guys start posting here about the groups you belonged to in the 50's and 60's.

Just found this thread. I'd be interested in Rich's idea of starting a thread about NJ clubs. I was in the Royal Rods in West Orange starting in 1956. I got to know many NJ guys through the New Jersey Timing Association. I was an officer there in '60 or '61. I still keep in touch with Pete VanIderstine of the Chatham Squires and with Lou Cinque of the Drivin' Deuces. Pete had a chain of speed shops in NJ for years. I recently borrowed the Timing Association scrap books and plan to scan all pictures - some dating back to 1953. And there are pics of drags at Linden Airport in '54 and at another site that I think is Woodbine which would be '56. So.... is there anybody else out the from that era?

  10. I remember having the Van Iderstine Speed Shop window decals when I was a kid. We all had them, along with the Wynn's stickers and the STP stickers which seemed to be everywhere back then. STP sure spent a lot of dough on giveaways back then.

Our club in West Orange was somehow recruited to help staff the Montgomery, NY, dragstrip in 1958. I ended up being the flagman. One of the more memorable things was flagging off Don Garlits on a record run. Earlier this year I got a chance to talk to him about that day and he showed me a picture taken as he came off the line on that run. I'm in the picture. Very cool.
