I was thinking about maybe taking a little height out of the roof of my 55 f-100 but didn't want to chop it. Any thoughts or opinions on the idea?
Tex Smith's "How to Chop Tops" shows an f100 of that era where they chopped it 1 1/2" i believe. It doesn't even look chopped. It just looks "right"....
Graffiti Publications has a great how to chop tops book out which shows how to whack a bit out of a 55 Chevy wagon tops sheet metal above the gutters - not sure if they did the gl*** or not - and it improved the looks of the top quite a bit. You should be able to find it on Amazon.
Hey, I boleave the term you're looking for is section. One normally refers to a hood panel as "pancaked" when upon compleation of the modification, it looks like an early Thunderbird hood or a Chrysler Imperial hood from '64- '66. That is, the hood panel seems to float between the fenders, the cowl and header panel. To section a roof on an F100 try to plan your cuts in the flat areas on the sides above the Drip & Cant rails. On the front, try and keep your cuts well above the Drip rail. The rear cuts will have to be made well below the pinch weld, in the flat areas of the back of that panel. One of the things I've always like about my '54 is the extra head room, thus its' never been chopped. If you're under six feet tall, chop away! S****ey Devils C.C. Come on...on a 53-55 F100 a 6 footer can have an 8 inch chop and still have excellent headroom (trust me on this one) But anyway...if I were cutting down the crown on the roof of one of these I would probably cut a hole in the roof far enough in so it clears all the interior structure around the edges. Then slice relief cuts at each corner so you can push the sheetmetal down to where you want it....just overlap the steel and mark where to trim. The reliefs would have to go almost to the edge of the roof so it doesn't buckle when you force the crown down. Then you can set the original piece back in place and mark where to trim it to fit the new size hole....or if you really want to reduce the crown just get a new roof piece from a nice donor car that has a flatter profile...maybe a mid 50's 4 dr sedan...trim fit and weld!!!
