I have a 61 Buick Special. It has drum brakes all the way around the car. I want to install a disc brake conversion kit, but I am leery about after market parts. I was thinking about installing on just the front, but will consider front and rear wheel disc brakes. What are your suggestions? Can anyone tell me of a high quality conversion kit?
Try ScareBird, I believe they sell something for your 4 bolt wheels using mitsubishi rotors and calipers. May have to go to 14" wheels. Then, you might want to do a 5 bolt conversion. That's what I plan to do with my '62 Skylark.
Drutattoo, I own a 61 Skylark and have been searching for a disc brake conversion for quite a while. No luck yet. The aftermarket doesn't really acknowledge the early Buick compact, which really stinks. I think they are great little cars.
Scarebird does list 1961-1963 Special/Skylark on their website: http://www.scarebird.com/6928.html You could also try Brake Tech Solutions: http://www.braketechsolutions.com/BTSV101/customkit.php or maybe try to contact some of the people in these threads and see what they did: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=33996 http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=133551 http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=146983
The Scarebird conversion has been successfully done on lots of the BOP Y body cars. You may want to join the skylark616263 yahoo group where there are detailed writeups on this swap. Scarebird sells front and rear disk conversion kits, but it sounds like you really only need to swap out the fronts on a street car. You will need to ugrade to an aftermarket 14" diameter or larger wheel as others have said.
