No, I'm not whining because I have one....

In a previous thread, I was asking about a noise my 56 Special was making whenever I started it. In that thread is a vid of extremely poor quality where you can hear the noise: (At the very end of the video, kind of sounds like a power saw)

In talking with some people on a Buick forum and on some Buick Dynaflow literature I found on the Net, apparently some Dynaflow whine is normal and expected, due to the planetary gears.

My question is, for those who have them, how loud and noticable is the whine from your trans when the engine is started/running in Park? Is it as loud as mine is?

Any advice is appreciated. I hate to run this engine for an extended period only to pound the last nail into the coffin of this transmission by ***uming the noise is normal when it isn't. But then again, my knowledge of Dynaflows wouldn't fill a teacup.

    Thanks!

That's too loud...they don't make much noise...are you sure it's the trans? Have you removed the fanbelt to make sure it's not an accessory?

No idea why yours sounds very loud. The 2 that I've driven haven't made that noise at all.

Hears a long shot. Years ago when I was a kid and was messing around with Buicks I seem to remember a needle thrust bearing on the front of the clutch drum which liked to whine. Hard shifts from low to drive could damage it.

Ok guys, thanks for the replies. I did run it without the accessory belts and the noise is still present. I have pulled the starter and neither it nor the flywheel show any signs of damage, and the starter bench tested perfectly at the local auto electric shop. The gear popped out, spun, and retracted as normal.

I guess this trans took a dump somewhere along the line.

  7. Wow !! I didn't know you could make a hard shift on a Dynaflow .

from Low to Drive you can...

GG, From the other thread, did you ever get your linkage fixed? I get a clicking on mine sometimes if I shift to neutral because the parking pawl in the tailshaft doesn't disengage fully. You may have sheared yours off?

I believe the shift linkage goes to the rear of the ****** and the carb linkage goes to the front...

Other thoughts, If your flywheel looks ok it could be a bad front pump (torque converter).

    Hey, what Buick forum?

The Buick forum I was on was V8buick.com

I never got my linkage sorted out. The lever towards the rear moves, but not very well. When the trans is in Park, should how should the lever be oriented? I tried shoving it forwards but it doesn't like to go that way too well.

Not sure with out getting underneath, and I have a '50 so they may be different. Thinking off the top of my head I would say forward for park. Is you drive shaft hooked up when it makes this noise? If so its probably not the pawl.

Buick had a problem when the crankshaft thrust brg. had too much end play. It would allow the crank to move rearward, loading the front pump gear, causing it to eat the thrust plate and ruin the ****** with metal shavings. I would suggest draining some fluid and check for metal . Better safe than sorry. I can't believe I recalled that from my memory from 50 yrs. ago when I can't remember to put the toilet seat down for my wife now days!

Haha amazing how the human memory works.

I got the car moved into the garage finally; had to reorganize heavily since the Bel Air is in there too. Now that it's inside I will have an easier time getting under it, so I will drain the ****** fluid and check for metal.

It's looking more and more like it's gonna be a rebuild/replace. Of course, I would be lying if I said it came as any surprise.
