Whatchama callits... whadaya call 'em?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Terranova, Sep 5, 2008.

  1. You mean like the thread about a club being banned in Sacramento because they attract morons to their show, then whine about the out come?

To quote Strother Martin, "what we have here is failure to comunicate"..............................

Yep! I agree with you. From what I've seen over to the GarageJournal and the minute amount of time spent on the motorsickle forum,it's par for the course here anymore.
Can't we all just get along? Share wisdom and hard-earned smarts, not yer bad attitude...

I do enjoy the sense of humor a lot of you guys have...Soil-myself-type-of-humor!

    As usual:
Do what you want to do. If you like 'em, great. If you don't, don't use 'em.
It's nobody's business but the car owner.
Back in the 60's, most car shows were three day indoor events, so everyone had show cards, hopefully off to the side or lying flat.

This is kind of like watching two bald men fighting over a hair brush...

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  4. Once again, we Old Farts are being "Skooled" by a bunch of twerps with the all encompassing knowledge that comes from repeated watching of American Grafitti. Get a grip, kiddies. IF you were fortunate enough to have a show worthy car, you showed a little class by giving recognition to the people who contributed to its build.

Dig! This isn't skating, BMXing or anything like that. Attitude is an inappropiate waste of time. Their were called Show Cards and they are an expression of respect.

If you REALLY want to honor the era, realize that that attitude would get you thrown out of most shops, shows and race pits. And, we were a lot younger and probably would poke ya in the snoot, too.

  5. Right on Phil!! The question that started this thread was answered many posts ago. I would hope your insightful post puts an end to it, but probably won't. In my experience, if somebody has something stupid to say, he's gonna' get it said.

    Hey guys...
    Your car is unique.
You want people to know just HOW unique.
You don't want to get "lost in the crowd"....
You have to stand out to be noticed!

  8. Something to keep the wife/gf/kids busy while you work on the car -

That said, I see nothing wrong with giving credit where credit is due, and saving yourself from having to answer 58 asinine questions "is that a small block?" while you're at it... if Joe's Uhpolstery Shop did your interior and Bob's Auto Body did the paint, you shouldn't be taking the credit for that anyways.

Growing up in the sixties, I remember alot of show boards at indoor shows. My older cousin, Mike Allen, was a show photographer in those days. He used a portrait camera to shoot the cars, which was very unique then. I would go along with him to hold the lights. We always took pictures before or after the show was open to the public. It was so cool when the owner dropped the ropes and we got right into the diplay to get the perfect shot. I spent whatever free time i had at the show, taking in the cars and reading show boards. I always thought they gave a little extra class to the display.

BTW. Like Chili said. "If you REALLY want to honor the era, realize that attitude would get you thrown out of most shops, shows and race pits".

I've had them for most of my cars over the years. The one's I hate are the ones that contain pictures of the car with the f'n car parked right there!

I had Dennis Ricklefs make my current one. Only problem was Dennis made it too big! It's 30x36 & won't fit in my Deuce. I'd need a support vehicle to bring it. It's black w/ deep red lettering (all the same color) & a lime green stripe surround.
I think less is more. Engine, trans, rear, paint, upholstery. To the point. I hate boards that look like a novel w/ a bolt-by-bolt description of the car build.
    KISS

You guys might hate it but I had a sign shop make a smaller version of Dennis's board that fits behind the seat. Only difference is the lettering has a fade from top to bottom to match the flames. Starts in yellow at the top & slowly fades to a deep red by the time you get to the bottom. Only way you could have pulled that off is with an air brush- maybe-but they use a sheet of vinyl that already has the fade (custom done sheet to match my colors) & cut the lettering out of it. Then it has a lime green stripe surround.

  12. Walked away from Darryl Starbirds with these. The judge said the display was represented well And the cars weren't bad either LOL. My point is tons of people stopped and read the Whatchama callits about the cars>>>>.

Hey Dean, Thanks for the history lesson. I never gave them much thought.

I can really appreciate those done by the same craftsmen that did the cars, but
I don't care much for the vinyl lettered plexiglass in front of the shiny late model.

  14. Of course, if the info on YOUR show card is limited to giving credit to the Rustoleum and duct tape that you bought at WallyMart, you might think it's stupid. And it would be.

A car on display without any information would be like a newspaper with just photos and no text.
Or, its like Playboy Magazine. Who in their right mind would buy a Playboy Magazine that didn't have articles and interviews with people you've never heard of?

Mine are to the point & try & answer the questions people ask you when you aren't at the car.

    Who did the flames?
What paint is that & is it a SS or a BC/CC?
    Who built the car?
Is that a leather interior & who did it?
What engine? What trans? What rear?
    Does it have a top?

Most car guys are looking for upholstery shops & painters. Why not give them the info they want?

I'm not sitting in a lawn chair all day answering questions- I'm out checking out your rides too.

  20. Where's the Angel Hair? I was never into signs but I guess it beats repeating yourself over and over again. And yes, signs are traditional.

Yeah, the whole thing was, I'm out looking at other cars, so I'm not there to answer questions and tell them the cool stuff, like my dad bought the car back in '55.

I plan on havinging the pinstriper hit it up with stuff like's on the car. Then I'm gonna give him credit for it... cause he kicks ass and deserves it.

Then I'm gonna give credit to the buddy who helped us put it all together... cause he kicks ass.

And its all to give respect to the history of the car and my dad (who lettered the Dog Catcher and Ohio George's blue malco willys among others) CAUSE HE KICKS ASS.

Thanks to all the guys who gave strait answers and kept the faith. And for those who opposed... I'll keep my attitude in check, cause I'm not getting bopped in the nose or kicked out of the pits for being a knucklehead.

This is the one Larry Fator lettered for us. Dean Lowe said it right, it's a work of art. We had to have some kind of board to explain the car's history and to thank the people who helped on the restoration.

if you don't have something to tell people whats been done to the car,how are they supposed to know? I think it should list the basics plus some of the items that people might not notice unless you told them. if something is obvious on the car,it doesn't need to be listed. imagine if you bought a magazine because you wanted to find out about the car on the cover, but it was all pictures and no information? this is the same perception that people at the shows will have of a car. if they pick your car out and walk over and look at it, It would seem to be rude to not have some sort of information about it. :) s far as pictures, make up an album of work being done on the car and keep it on the seat,if people ask,let them look at it.

as far as photos being taken of the car.most people would be happy to move their sign because you care enough to take a picture of THEIR car

    Nice sign...Don't take this wrong...
I'd like to know if you were given a discount since "Halibrand" and "undercarriage" were misspelled.

  27. And the car is wilder then that sign isn't Nick??????
I believe Ed told me that the LaSalle was the first car he built and as far as I know he still owns it today...joe

  28. I guess those signs are nice and traditional when they're hand painted, but it kind of bugs me when people put them in front of their car on a huge stand because then you can't take a good picture of the car or even see the whole car at once without the sign in the way. Maybe just leave it lying flat on the ground, so it won't block the view of the car. If someone wants to know all the details, they'll see the sign on the floor.

I also always see the owners of those signs on stands having to constantly pick up the stand over and over when people accidentally knock it over -- unless it's in a completely roped off area. Looks like a hazard to me. I'd be worried the sign would just fall over and scratch up a nice paint job.
