ALL of the vintage four cylinder records in streamliner and lakester set at Speedweek 2008 weren't even as fast as the 143.54 mph SCTA record set by Bob Rufi at Harper dry lake on May 19, 1940.

Below is the fastest vintage four cylinder streamliner or lakester record set at Speedweek 2008.

    <TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD>V4F</TD><TD>Bean Bandits</TD><TD>F. Valdez</TD><TD>08/08</TD><TD>
    138.219
    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Other vintage four cylinder streamliner and lakester records set at Speedweek 2008 were:

    <TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD>V4</TD><TD>4-Ever-4 Special</TD><TD>J. Brierley</TD><TD>08/08</TD><TD>
    125.276
    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
    <TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD>V4F</TD><TD>Old Crow Speed Shop</TD><TD>B. Green</TD><TD>08/08</TD><TD>
    104.216
    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
    <TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD>V4F</TD><TD>Old Crow Speed Shop</TD><TD>B. Green</TD><TD>08/08</TD><TD>
    135.164
    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Aren't records supposed to represent, oh, I dunno, PROGRESS?

What committee of geniuses set the "minimums" for those cl***es without having the least clue about the real potential of a four cylinder motor from that period?

Since Rufi set a SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TIMING ***OCIATION record, the fair and true thing to do would be to figure out whatever cl*** his car fits into today and give him that record.

Their are no "Minimums" at Bonneville. Old Crow and Bean Bandits ran in the Flathead four cl***. Rufi had an Overhead Chevy four. Different cl***. Different records.

I have known about Rufi's record for over thirty years. I bought the Petersen's The Complete Chevrolet Book 3rd Edition at a newsstand in 1973, not from a dealer at a swap meet.

    Ratliff,

Please find me an old record for a "FLATHEAD" Ford 4 banger from any year that was faster than what Fabian and myself ran this year. I would be very interested in seeing it.

And Rufi's overhead record was beat years ago and is now held by Creel at over 200 mph. Sounds like progress to me.

I got some books too, doesnt make my opinion any better than anybody elses.
Why dont you call the SCTA? I'm sure that they will be glad to have your wealth of historic knowledge and will rush to correct any oversight. I curious do you race? Jay

maybe if you're so friggin smart about land speed racing and records, you'd be able to figure out you're tryin to compare apples to oranges here... the two arent in the same cl***.

At least up through 1974, there was no such thing as a vintage four cylinder cl*** in SCTA racing. There was simply X and ** cl***es. The X cl*** records listed in the 1974 rulebook were 209.955 mph for streamliner and 188.102 mph for lakester. There were no X and ** records listed for streamline or lakster. The X cl*** record was 164.873 mph for modified roadster while the ** record was open.

I don't know how much you know? but it sure looks like not much. All of the runs you mentioned, Were Flathead except for one. Making a flathead run anything over 110 mph is quite a feat. Most of the overheads run 5 main cranks and that doe's make a differance. Before you start bashing cars and guys that have done it, why don't you give it a try and see just how hard it is ***holeth.--TV

In the 1974 SCTA rulebook, the only vintage cl***es listed were X and **. ** was not allowed in streamliner. X was 0 to 325 cubic inch flathead OR pre 1959 inline. ** was 0 to 325 cubic inch flathead OR pre 1959 inline WITH specialty heads or blowers.

Inline flatheads are so obsolete they were already considered obsolete in 1940 when Rufi set his record.

There were two car records set at Speedweek 2008 that were slower than the 94 mph 750 cc cl*** production car record set in 1931 at Daytona by Sir Malcolm Campbell.
The current human powered land speed record is 81 mph. That’s almost as fast as the slowest car record set at Speedweek 2008. That’s faster than 15 of the bike records set at Speedweek 2008. Beyond that, there were TWO 2,000 cc bike records set that weren’t even 83 mph! How the hell does someone even manage to write bike rules that make it possible to set a 2,000 cc record without even going 83 mph? There was a 500 cc bike record set at only 60.909 mph. That’s 20 mph SLOWER than the human powered land speed record. Now THAT is laughable.

There was no separate cl*** in 1940 for flatheads. Rufi wanted to be the fastest and so used the better technology.

Ratliff, The Flathead 4 Cyl motor, was made obsolete for speed trials the day someone made an overhead conversion for one, Oh..... Say around 1925.
But thanks to the overwhelming interest and the SCTA, the flathead 4 now has it's own cl***. Now they are running in speed trials again, which hasn't happened since the early 1940's. It's a wonderful thing.

Have you ever been to speedweek?
    Probably not,
Any record at Bonneville is hard to get.We missed ours by 3 MPH.
So give these people that got a record the recognition they deserve.
Maybe if you stepped away from your computer and books and got in the real world you would understand.

I could give a **** less what records are set on the salt. The salt to me has always been the backyard builder, doing what he wanted, with what he had at hand and then taking it out and "seeing what she'll do".

I know some folks are all about tenths of a second but for me it's the ingenuity and variety of the machinery, and that includes 50cc buzz bombs.

I love run what ya brung, and I think that this type of racing is really the last bastion of that type of thinking.

Attending is on my bucket list. Maybe next year as I have already broached the subject with the Mrs. and she agrees I ain't getting any older. lol

    GV has left the soapbox.
