ok so i finally got my car stripped down to the shell. I want to get the whole car in bare metal so that I can start doing all the patch panels and what not. What do you guys recommend using to do so and also something that doesnt take to much metal off with the paint. I dont want to use air craft remover or anything like that.
Plastic media blasting may be your best bet, but you can't do it yourself and it's not inexpensive. I have no reservations about using paint stripper and a s****er followed by a D/A sander with 220-grit. That's what I used on my coupe and my truck, and they came out well. This is the stuff....... no chemicals, no burns, only dust and works like crazy It does no harm to the base metal and really eats plastic filler Scotch-Brite Clean 'n Strip XT Disc 27658, 8 in x 1/2 in, 15 discs per case Perfect alternative to wire brushes for removing weld discoloration, scale, rust, paint, coatings, gasket and sealing compounds, adhesives and marine algae. bluto, have you used this on a build of your own? how did it work? did it leave a bunch of grooves and such in the sheet metal?
I have used this stuff for years the black stuff ...... purple is supposed to be even better Takes a little experiance to not grind the discs to a nubb quickly I don't 'Do builds' I work. Read what I said It is pretty kind to the metal. Some scratches (primer filler) no grooves. Remember most of what I work on is Aluminum not steel. The mess sweeps or vacuums up. Wear a mask I use a heavy Makita grinder and let it's weight do the work If you want to save some money look for large floor stripping discs you can easily cut smaller ones with tin snips 3M seems to charge as much for small sizes as large 3" is $8 ...... 18" is $20 and will net you far more material but again that's the black stuff
I don't buy from Eastwood's either, but I have years ago. I used to buy some that they had. Are these the same as the one' s that you buy? I usually buy these at swap meet, but they are mostly the 4" size, the one's I used to buy at Eastwood's were larger. I agree with your ***essment of Eastwood's, they are pricey.
Those scotch brite type deals to go on angle grinders are gold, gold I tells ya. Little to no metal removal.
Link doesn't work....... don't bother fixin it Find a janitors supply and buy the large floor strippin' discs Use a hole saw to cut the center hole Do a Google look on eBaY Anything but Eastwood Here look at this http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/paint-stripping.htm
You can buy batches of up to 100k of them a month direct from the manufacturer in China here: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/205762617/Scotch_Brite_Clean_and_Strip_XT.html Of course, that's the 2" discs... if you want other sizes, they have those, too: http://cnjddq.en.alibaba.com/group/0.html Not that anyone NEEDS that many of 'em... but still, good info to know... in case you have to like, strip a battleship or something. ~Jason
The discs on the link are the same as the one's I've bought at swap meets. I'll look around for another source.
I have no problem how you spend your hard earned money. Just don't ask me to give em any This was my bare metal car we restored in 1989 from a burned mess
the 3m clean and strip pads are available locally around here at all the hardware(big and small) stores, and a few of the auto parts houses. I have a dedicated air angle grinder just for these pads, they work wonders at removing mill scale as well. Matt
Hey, Eastwood has a rep for not honoring its' contracts to its' vendors/suppliers! Careful shopping can usually find ya those items listed in their catalog much closer/cheaper to home. Beware of anyone trying to sell ya a kit to do anything! Usually a "kit" contains 75% ******** items (where the vendor really makes his money), 25% that of which is necessary! S****ey Devils C.C. Sunchaser Tools in Pasadena has the stripping discs for about 12 bucks each. I used them on my Model A Sedan (about 3 discs) and they work great! Just be careful on how you use them..You can shorten the life of the disc if you incorrectly angle them. A makita GV5000 worked great for me.
DITTO! Just striped the BEST 1931 Ford Tudor body I've ever seen with paint remover, good putty knife and a straight razor holder and you'll be in base steel in less than a day. Paint remover only removes paint, not metal.
well heres an idea, i just bought a couple of 3m scotchbright pads used for floor refinishing, they are 12" X 18" and come in a range of grits, the black ones look to be the most course, i bought the green ones to take the gloss off a dance floor, now i think i can cut some 6" circles out of a black one and use it on my wen 6" sander to strip a car down to bare metal, maybe, they only cost $6 each.
Socal1, its looks nice! I ended up using the norton blue disc. Its basically the same as the purple 3m disc. It worked well for me and wasnt very messy either. I got most of the car done but stopped with the body for now. I took the body off the frame and I am working on getting the frame, suspension (air ride) brakes and fuel line done. I am trying to take my time on it and get it done right the first time. I plan o having it done for next summer. I will try and post the build. Its just I am super busy.
