  1. Just received my monthly newsletter from Sacramento Vintage Ford. It included an interesting announcement that Boy's sons will soon be opening a new rod shop. Any left coast HAMBers have additional info?

  3. Too bad they can't make their own name for themselves.

  4. who knows it might do OK if they bring in some of the "talent" dad used to farm stuff out to and keep that P.O.S. Duane out of the scene!

Ya...why take advantage of your Dads name, when you can struggle in obscurity for 50 years?

I think it's pretty cool to carry on their father's name like they are. Which ever style they choose to build their cars in, I am sure they have one proud father looking down.

Why does that make them SOBs? If my dad had left me some buisness (which he didn't so I work for the man), I bet I would just keep running it under the same name. They are calling it "Sons of Boyd", sounds like a different buisness to me. If they can get a head start with good marketing using the fact that pop was Boyd more power to them. In the end they've got to be able to make something people want to buy or adios.

Nothing wrong with doing something out of respect for your father, I wish them well.

    Duane = Douche

On a different note... I hope his kid makes it. Business is tough. Especially right now.

    Fingers crossed for those guys.

Dunno about some of you, but if my ole dad had left me a million dollar name and I let it gather dust......he'd come back just to kick my stupid ass!

Looks more about selling "Boyd" memorabilia than building cars at the moment.

Lots of guys have got their start in the rodding business because their dads were in it but it is up to them to make a go out of it. Chip Foose is one good example. I first saw photos of him as a teenager helping around Sam's shop in a couple of magazines. Dad's name may have got him an early head start but he took it from there. We will have to wait and see if these three are up to the task.

You mean like Legacy with Indian Larry? No one bitches about Kino and Paul do they?

I wish them all the best. I intensely dread the day my father passes. Style issues aside, anything they can do to continue the legacy and go on without their dad is ok by me.

In the long-ago past, people used to carry-on with their family's trade/craft for generation after generation and pass those skills down.

Nowadays, everyone wants to do something "different" than what their old man did for a living. That is part of why craftsman type skills are disappearing.

Without getting into a discussion of whether Boyd had "craftsman skills" - I still say that it is a good thing to carry-on a family tradition. Nothing wrong with that.

  16. After checking out the web site, it looks like they are not announcing a rod/custom building business, but rather an internet sales site of Boyds old T-shirts and memorabilia.

I'm guessing they don't have the rights to the old company name, hence the new ID which is kind of cool. I rather like the tung 'n cheek use of the S.O.B. It's cool that Boyds name wasn't Fred or Larry.

So, Henry Ford II should have closed up the doors of his grandpa's Ford Motor Company and started a "Just some unknown Hank's Stuff" company just to "make a name for himself?"

I'd rather see people inherit and keep running their OWN family named businesses than have everything get gobbled up by the who-knows-who they really are or where they sit in the power seat answer to no country corporations.

I met Boyd C at the second Anti Blessing of the cars and he seemed like a real guy who loved cars, all kinds of cars.

Hating on Boyd (and/or sons) is like the moron bully kid in grade school who hated and picked on anyone who knew the answers and raised the grade curve higher than the zero that was them.

  18. Django and Shifty...I agree with both of you guys...good luck to them...No matter what anybody here thinks about the cars Boyd built he helped launch many careers and alot of trends (some good and some bad) were started right there in his shop.
My dad is getting up there in years and everyday that I still get to talk to him and pick his brain is a gift...they no longer have that luxury. I think I will give my Dad a call right now...Mom too.

Yeah, I spoke to both my parents yesterday. Last month, my Dad made a funny comment about how far to go on his barn restoration project and it not really mattering if it lasted beyond 20 years. That would make him 80. That freaked me out.

Well, whatever they are going to do, I wish them well.

Now, on another note, I took a look at their website and...here we go again with the grouchy stares and the...gloomy looks.
I know this generation thinks its either cool to be mad or to try to look tough, but geez, who wants to do business with someone who looks pissed?

Its not that I wouldn't do business with them. Its just that looking grumpy like that neither looks cool or tough, so it just puzzles me, thats all.

Tv has a lot of influence on how people act on camera i know some1 who used to paint on a show and he split because they wanted him to be a asshole yell and scream and throw shit. But i don't think as many people would have left boyds if duane wasn't a true asshole. But good luck to boyds sons.

American Hotrod was more dramatic than a mexican soap opera. I liked seein what they could do... but I really didnt enjoy watching it. (slightly O/T, yes?)

p.s. American Chopper was the same way.

Either R&C or HR did a feature on Blackie in the last month or two, real good article. Several vintage non-smiling photos, a few Roth shots are coming to mind as well.

Point being, NOT A NEW THING. People have been serious for decades. Seriously.

    bullshit!

  30. It would be a shame to see that legacy fizzle into a T-shirt company.

I hope they keep on building cars.

Greg & Chris are good guys & friends. I wish them well.
