Thanks in advance. O.K. 57 chevy Bel Air Hard top. I am moving the rear springs to underneath the frame and tubbing the trunk to the distance of the outside of the frame rails. Also a 2-3" drop. Has anyone done this and know what the maximum width and height tire I can go with? Thanks, Jason
I have N50-15s on 8.5 inch rims with 2 inches of clearance on both sides of the tires.Can,t tremember my back spacing but the rear end is a 59 Ford 9 inch.Gonna switch to 10s when I get some cashola ahead.
Thanks for the info but I dont think that includes doing a mini tub. I wonder how much more room for tires that gives you?
My car has the tubs moved in flush with the frame,springs are moved in,with the Ford 9 inch in there and the tires are 12.5 inches wide. I,ll be switching to 10 inch rims now that I know how much back space I have to have.
i've done as much as 11" with 3.5" back space on tri five chevies. with a narrowed rear end of course.
Thank you, do you know the width of your rear axle....what is your back spacing? I am in the process of ordering a custom 9" from Currie. Trying to get my ducks in a row.
Its a stock 59 Ford 9 which are around 57 1/4 inches wide at the drum mounting surface. I have a Detroit Locker or a Trac-loc to put in it but can,t decide on a ratio. I,m thinking high 3,s..... Don,t remember what back space my rims are at the moment.
As far as ratio 3.70, Trans Tremec 5spd TKO 600, 580 Hp on motor. That's what I have with my gear decision anyway.
Mine is old school....454 big block,4 speed Borg Warner Super T10.I,m thinking 3:70,s or 3:89,s. The Trac-loc is a 3:50.
You are using a spring pocket through the frame or relocating the hangers side to side? In the case of the latter you will need to relocate the gas tank to the center of the frame rails and you will lose the spare tire pocket. This will let you use a 10" rim for sure. Using the spring pocket with the front mounts for the springs I am not too familiar with, but I think in either case you might have to add at least 1" on the inside of the wheelwell in the trunk. Just a halfa$$ed guess......
On my 57 sedan we used 15x10 t.t.d's. I'm not sure of the offset because that was all you could get at the time. We moved the inner wheel tub to the frame. Set the wheels and tires under the car where we wanted them and the measured for the rear (9"). I ran ladders and coilovers. The car sat real low on 29X12.5 Mickeys but its new owner raised it up in the picture.
For anyone who is trying to figure out what wheel and tire combination will fit in a tri five Chevy, here is a link to a calculator.
