Damn ,have Toploaders really gotten that expensive ? I'm gunna have to raise the asking price on my car next time around...
That was my original plan until I calculated costs and pros and cons etc. Now I have a WC T5. I was looking at nothing under $1K for a rebuilt unit, around $5-600 for a "good" one and $2-300 for a core. Ooof.
Once again outstanding info. I am having trouble finding A T5 here in town. Small town in the middle of nowhere.
If you go with a T-5 I recommend you invest in a good shifter with positive stops. When I was shopping for T-5's I found several that had been damaged because the shift forks had been leaned on a little too hard.
Yes. Theres a tech on here for making postive stops on a stock shifter that someone did that was very good. I sure Flat Ernie knows, he's the T5 guru. Or I'm sure any aftermarket shifter has them as well.
If you're going to power shift you'll need more than the shifter stops on a t-5 the forks and some other parts won't take the abuse. I just pulled my Z spec Ford Motorsport T-5 the second time for shifter problems from power shifting ( Hurst shifter with stops) and It won't go back in till it has the performance shift parts from Astro. If you just street drive it and shift semi normal you'll be OK. I've pulled the wheels on my 2,850lb Comet (5,000 rpm launch with slicks ) with out damaging a 94 v6 Mustang WC T-5 so you should be ok with a 302 in a light car. 4.57 gear runs about 2,800 rpm on the interstate with the .64 OD still kind of high for long runs.
