Are there any "guidelines" as to what to use? Such as vehicles 19**-** use DOT 3, vehicles 19**-2000 use 4,5 or what ever??

They all mix except for silicone fluid which I believe is DOT5.

For street cars use 3. The other stuff is for racing and is more prone to absorb water and the mfgs "expect" racers to change it more often. Gary

Actually, DOT 3 & 4 will both absorb water vapor.

DOT 5 is Silicone and will NOT absorb water. Don't mix the two types. If you want to go to DOT 5 in an old system, change every rubber component in the wheel cylinders, M/C, change hoses, etc. Also clean out all the brake lines or replace them.
