Well one of the mufflers blew out on my car today. I'm running a late model 302 Ford. I think it was turbo mufflers on there, they always sounded pretty good. The pipes are in ok shape. I am trying to decide if i should just replace the mufflers or do everything.
Regardless, now I have to decide what mufflers. I want it to be a little loud and mello. I want it to sound like a hot rod should.

Everyone tells me flowmasters, but I don't know. Not really old timey sounding.

The turbos sounded good. I'm even considering a set of smithy's gl***packs.

What would be good on a '60's type ride?

If you like a little noise I would go with the gl*** packs. I have them on everything I drive. Just my opinion.

If you want the "old" sound, there isn't much choice......."Smittys" of course!

I run auger style mufflers on my 37` they have a great low rumble at idle ...and very good sound at speed ...... they are shapped just like a gl*** pack only all steel , nothing to burn out ... I have put them on a bunch of my diesel customers , mine was the first gas rig I have heard them on .... I like the sound .........

i like the magnaflows, they are not old school but they sound great. steel packing. well built and come in stainless if you want. all sorts of shapes and sizes. i mactually thinking of putting one on my es***. i have muscle cars, most musclecar guys drewl over flowmasters, i really dont like them. they sound great on a 10 second car but really are no fun with the steady drone in the car.

I have 16" gl***packs on the Deuce. Rumbly through the city and quiet on the highway.

Another vote for Brockman's. Call up Brock and he'll make a set for you, or can recommend a size and packing to meet your needs. Great people, great products.
Since a Ford doesn't sound very old timey to begin with, and you don't want it real loud, get a set of gl***packs, but long ones, 24-30". Have a ddep rumble without a lot of noise.

Today's repro Smithys gl***packs are nothing like the original 50s Smithys steelpacks they got famous for in the days.

Brockman's Mellowtone Steelpacks are the best sounding and longest lasting of all the straight-through muffler designs available today.
    - Nothing mellow about them at 12" or 17" length...

All the generic gl***packs I have seen in muffler shops have too many louvers inside.
Most gl***packs made today sound like plastic toys to my ears.
A more durable fibergl*** is used nowadays which can't be 'tuned' with water like the original ones when they came out first.

You want loud? Stuff a baffle insert from Car Chemistry in your collector and eliminate your exhaust system (providing you have headers.) There are two and three baffles available but I'd recommend the three baffle as I run a two baffle on mine (blown & injected SBC) and it's loud. Also check with noise levels in your area first.

I like the Hushpower II's from Flowmaster. they sound inbetween a Gl*** pack, and Flowmaster..........not all rappy like a gl***pack, but not all rumbly like a flowmaster. Not too loud, but not all silent either. They are the same size of a gl***pack, so will fit well in a small space.

Not traditional, so place em where they wont be seen, but I really like them.

dynomax ultraflow and magnaflow mufflers dont have louvers, they have a preforated pipe, maybe 1/8" holes. i like the sound of both. both well made, to last dynomax has gl***, magnaflow has steel.
