I have a 1977 351w and want to build this for low RPM torque and I want dual quads on a tunnel ram (just because). What would be a good choice for pistons, cam, ect.. Any Ideas?? Im taking it to the machine shop for a hot dip and a bore, Im not doing the bore untill I have an idea which way to go. Thanks for any info
You have a basic conflict of end results. A tunnel ram 2X4 intake is only efficient @ high RPM. it's not a low end torque set up, period! You need a single dual plane 4 bl intake & RV cam.
I think you'll find that the Windsor will produce more than enough low end torque for most cars with just minor upgrades...like George said, single 4 bl, RV cam. Mallory HEI dist. is a huge improvement in performance as well. A snappy rebuilt C-4 should help put it to the ground.
it is possible to use the tunnel ram, but I would not. a friend has a maverick that has a tunnel ran and he went against the popular flow, and his runs perfectly. very mild mannered. lots of work though. contact me and I will send you his e mail. jim.
What about 6 singles or 3 2 barrels, I just dont what the norm.. I kinda figured about the quads just was hoping for that magic setup. I know how heavy my foot is and Ill be at 1500-2500 most of the time..
Smogger motors had retarded cams. If you replace the timing set with OEM-type parts, go for early '70s parts if you have a choice. That ought to help a bit.
You could do 2 quads on a low/medium rise. Edelbrock just started making such an intake for the 351W. 3x2 are do-able but you will need a 302 intake and adapters to put it on a 351W. To the best of my knowledge nobody makes a 6 singles intake for the 351W or the 302. A friend of mine had a super simple, strong running 351W/C4 combo that sounded really good. Ran on pump gas and put a '68 Mustang fastback in the mid 13's with 3.00 gears and an open diff. He had .030" over pistons (10.25:1 If I remember right) on the OEM crank & rods with a OE-spec replacement dampner and a OEM flywheel all balenced. Topped with Dart II iron heads (2.02/1.60 valves) with Comp Cams stamped steel rockers (against my reccomendation as I pushed for real roller rockers) and a Comp Cams 292H camshaft with .518" lift and 244 duration at .050". For intake he had a Edelbrock Perf. RPM even thoguth I pushed for the Weiand as I personally think their intakes are better. And he had a 650 holley vac secondary (but needed more on the top end). You can get way better heads now for less. This thing ran great and sounded awesome. I committed the build spec's to memory because of it's sound and function. With gears and traction it may have touched 12's but he and his wife got divorced becasue she slept with his co-worker sheriff's deputy while the deputy was on duty and she was doing ride along for college. They sold the car before completing the planned build. Would this engine you want to build happen to be for the car in your avatar? EDIT: Did a some thinking and remembered that it was 9.25:1 CR not 10.25:1 CR. 10.25:1 would have been better.
If you are looking for the 302 intake to 351W adapters I have seen them online a few places. I'm sure a google search would yeild a few options. Flatlander Racing is one place I recall seeign them for sale.
When I built the windsor for my 52 a few years ago I bought a 393ci stroker kit from these guys.... http://www.gofaststuff.com/kits.html I then had the kit balanced, added a set of world products windsor SR heads and called comp camps and had a 282 durration, .529 lift solid lifter cam cut. I used a weiand stealth intake adn edelbrock carb and really like this setup in my truck.
Probably runs great, but it's not a low end torque motor either. Of course where he's actually just looking for a cool intake, it might not matter either way.
He ran a 3000 stall convertor and it pulled pretty good off the bottom and it never stopped pulling. Edelbrock's dual quad Air Gap intake with a couple carbs and a proper cam would deliver some real throttle response and bottom end go if set up right. And it's look good too.
I understand where you at with running a tunnel ram or multi carb intake. I have a 289 Ford and wanted the same thing to look cool or stand out from the crowd when the hood comes up. Everyone is correct in here. Multi carb intakes don't run well except at top end or high rpm. You can run some gears like 4.11 or lower but forget highway use. I had the Edelbrock lowrise manifold for dual quads. I had two Edelbrock 500 CFM carbs on it. It was hell to adjust them and get everything to idle and run correctly. Off the line, the engine was a pig, 2500 rpm and up. It pulled nicely as I watched the gas guage drop. I got rid of the intake and used a standard single carb aluminum manifold. I put a Holley 650 DP on, jetted it, adjusted it and the engine comes unglued. I'll keep the single carb over the multi carb. If you want low end performance, you don't need a high lift high duration cam. If you want to look cool, B&M make a cool little blower setup which would look nice.
Another place for intake adapters is Price Motorsport. Just google them and it will come up . They are nice people to deal with and make a nice products, too. Gasserman
