In some ways it reminds me of the 50/60s Porsche 356s...

Here are two shots of it before the restoration. It's hard to imagine letting a car like this just waste away. It looks like it sat in a swamp in Florida.

You can have it. Think I'm the only guy on the HAMB that could care less bout a Vette, even as rare as that one is.

  10. See, now '56-'57 are some of the few Corvettes I really like - only problem with that one is I'd be scared to ever drive it out of the driveway -

I always get a kick out of a "Americas Sports Car" with 1949 Chevy suspension. maybe I'll enter my 49 in the autocross... oh wait.. I ruined it with MII.

    nevermind

cool assed Vette I'd take the before or the after, I'm not picky.

ok... i gotta say, vettes arent my thing, but the title of the thread, and the website mentioned has me wondering.

i always thought that COPO wasnt around untill GM got tight with big block cars in the late 60's

anyone shed some light on that for me?

  13. I do realize that this is a traditional forum but check out Legendary,s past restorations. There isn,t enough money to buy all of that machinery......more hemis than I have gray hairs.

Any idea why they changed he color from red to black? Prob worth a pile any way but that I imagine takes some value away?

Looks like it was originally black and then repainted red at a later date. They probably went with the original black.

If I sold coke I would buy it in a heart beat. Learned how to drive a stick fast when I was 13 in my dad's friend's 61 roadster. I have a warm spot deep in side for putting one of those side ways in a parking lot!!

According to the Black Book there were only 43 '57's built with the 283-283FI and 53 built with the off road suspension. Early Corvettes didn't have a trim tag like later ones, some of them had a grease penciled initial, in the trunk or behind the seat, signifying what the original color was. Legendary always builds car that are first class.

  21. You're not alone. Never been a big 'Vette guy, they were Soc cars when I was comming up.

Although if I had a '58-9 I'd love to make a gasser out of one. :D

Never the less its a pretty cool car.

COPO stands for Central Office Production Order and basically is a way for dealers to special order things that were not normal options. For example, a fleet color on certain cars. Say you wanted Daytona Yellow sprayed on an Impala so you wouldn't have to repaint it for taxicab duty - you would have the dealer create, and the factory would have to approve, a COPO for that. The two most famous ones were the iron and aluminum L72 and ZL1 427s in Camaros Corvettes and Chevelles, but there were a lot of others.

I didn't read the article and I'm not sure what is COPO about that car, but it was probably a whole group of options that were wrapped in a single COPO to make it a racer.

    Badass Vette!!

I didn't read it either, but we tend to think of COPO cars as having been ordered with the big engine, big brakes, radio delete, and heater delete. Some people that were going to be taking their new car in for a custom paint job were even able to have their new cars delivered in primer.

    I've always liked the "straight-axle", pre-'63 Corvettes.

as much as an anti "penis envy" car guy that i am, i am inlove with this one. those old vettes are a huge part of my obcession of cars today and im super excited to see this one....on top of the fact that its a thread that is not about a model a or deuce.

  27. wow! that before pic's were crazy. never seen a "rotted" valve cover like that. even as impressive as the finished product is.....

That is one beautiful competition mochince. I don't see how any body can hate an old race car. Corvettes weren't always owned by goldchainers.
