Just curious if this was a popular thing.I just picked up an intercom panel from a B-52D Bomber, to use as my "switch" board.I'd like to see some pics if anyone else has gauges and such.
It looks a bit basic for me, what about using some 20's to 40's old radio parts? Think old A****er-Kent stuff.............?
I've seen a few pics in 50s magazines of rods with a row of surplus aviation gages in the dash. I even went shopping for gages at the gift shop at the Pima Air Museum (tucson) last time I was there...but it was all late model stuff. I need to hit some of the aircraft salvage places there.
There's some neat stuff out there Squirrel! Maybe after my surgery we can meet up and do the salvage and lunch thing. And we are coming up on the nice weather now! Maybe we can find something cool Rodknocker would enjoy as well!
i never made it farther than buying a few of them, but the problem i have in my mind is getting the 12 volt car system to jive with the 24 volt system that the gauges use, if they aren't manual.
This is from one of our fellow Cheaters Mike Lange. He has a pretty neat 32 5 window and yes all of the gauges work. As appropriate and loved as a ***** in sweatpants. Jerome
The backs of some of the gauges were changed to a more simple mechanical when appropriate.. The speedo is actuated by a pitot tube tucked into the left front frame horn. Tach is mechanically driven off the back of the generator with its own gear mechanism that he machined. The other stuff ummm if I remember correctly what he told me was ... he dropped down the voltage and used / spliced the same senders that you would use in a normal car. I mean really... This dude made the supercharger too... it's a brand new Italmecchanica not a S.C.o.T. Mike has some skills Hope this helps. Jerome
Indoor car show Kook rules enforced by local yokel fire department KookS. Could only enter the building with a half of tank of gas or less..correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a half filled tank more dangerous with the fumes??? Had to disconnect battery as well, with and inspection by the FD guy . Rome
Ive been wanting an altimeter in my car for about a year but the cool looking ones are just too expensive for my budget..If anyones got one cheap I would sure appreciate it...heres a picture of it..
like anything else, aircraft guagea can look great when used properly. when used in badly, they will just look stupid. the dash full of airplane guages looks right to me
I'm running the same B-24 switchgear in my rod. They show up once in a while on Ebag. They work great & the little red ****on can be used as a starter ****on. I also found an old fuel pressure gauge that I mounted to my fuel block.
Great car-too many gauges-that's just silly-though I like the gauges. If you check on Ebay, aircraft gauges the genuine hotrod era are VERY expensive. I've been looking for a clock and we are seriously talking $150 for one that doesn't work??
I'm using a fuel gauge from a Cessna Birddog drop tank in the tank for my modified. The red band says "No Take-Off". Also using bits from a Dakota (DC3) and a Huey.
Back seat betty's interior is really neat. Fits the car perfectly What is the vary large gauge in the center of the dash though???? Jerome
I've been stock piling aero gauges for awhile now. Can usually pick them up from plane swap meets pretty cheap like $5 a piece.
To hell with the gas pedal, Mike's dash gives me wood. Here's a finished shot of Back Seat Betty. The Fuel gauge is a B-24. The lights are a recognition lights box. The quadrant is P-47. The light at the top is RAF. Our shop truck is getting aircraft gauges too. The '27 T roadster is getting all RAF gauges as the owner's uncle built Mosquitos during the war. And of course the Bonneville car will have them too, which is what started this whole obsession for me, at least. I've got 2 NOS B-17 radio self destruct switches. They are bad ***. Think they will p*** tech at Bonneville? Hahaha!
Neat post. So, I ***ume the airspeed gage works and 140 a "telltale"? Be neat if some of you who have done this would do a tech post on it.
landing gear lever from an AT-6 Texan would make a *****in gear selector for an automatic or E- brake lever......
It's a '36 Plymouth Black speedo cluster. We had it all refitted by United Speedometer, except they changed the fuel level to a fuel pressure (we're running the separate B-25 wing tank gauge) and where it once said "Plymouth" it no says "Air Speed". Oh, and the speed is now 140 where it was 100.
