I think it's a fair price these days. Make sure the guy is a pro, not some shade tree mechanic. Look for photos of other cars he has done, and ask for a reference! You don't want this guy to warp your panels. I paid $1700 for a guy to rotisserie blast, and etch prime a 67 Mustang. I think it was well worth it. Make sure it is in primer immediately...just my $0.02

The guy that did my coupe charged $45/hr, and also disassembled it. He's been doing it here locally for umpteen years...no warpage. There is another company here that charges $100/hr.

Just paid $200 for a 28 sedan body. You have to watch for warp. It is a real pitfall.

I couldnt find a trustworthy guy in my area

both quoted me a grand for the body and frame

thought that was an O.K. price....but

when I started asking about media type and warpage

I got the same response....."Ive been doing it this way for 25 years" and "Ive done this a million times"

when I here either of those phrases I WALK...

I think the guy was hosing you on the cost to do the frame, I got quoted 100 to 125 for my model A frame. I have the equipment to do the blasting, but I didnt have the time. I hired it out and it was done the same day , he charged me 120, and it was a very good job, I asked him about his rates and he said 100 per hour. As far as having my body done I didnt see it as necessary, at least not all of it.. the 3 problem areas (rear fender wells and under the upper dash panel) I will just do those myself.

A friends shop is now doing soda blasting if MD isn't too far for ya. They have a mobile setup also and maybe willing to travel to your area.
Call Paul @ Automotive Enhancements (301)696-0020 to see what they'll charge. What you're working on likely can be cleaned up with soda and they'll take their time as well as undercut anyone elses price.

I just had the frame and rear fenders for my 47 International done and I paid $162. The whole thing was done with silica and finished in an hour. They lower the pressure for sheetmetal. The compressor that runs their blaster is 1050cfm so on sheetmetal it is more like a HVLP kind of deal as I understand it. I told him I was going to have the cab dipped for $900 and he said he would blast it inside and out for $250 and there would be no warpage. This guy is 70 years old and been doing this a long time. I would think you could find better pricing in your area.

About $75-$80 an hour is right in the area. Frame and body should be quick and able to be cleanly done. I pm'd you details on a place.

Like to see 'em get all that to metal without warping it in 4 hours...

Depending on the media & pressure, you can clean anything quickly. 60-80 PSI and sand... 4 hours is no problem. Your body guy is gonna hate you 'tho. Doing it without warpage is a different story. Did your guy actually look at the vehicle, or is he just going off pictures/description. Judging by what has come thru the shop here of late, i'd have to bid that at 5-6 hours. at least. Stuff like that gets Starblast at 40-45 PSI. Takes a little more time, but when it comes out of the booth, it's ready for epoxy.

the glass beads won't hurt your car, especially if he keeps it around 45 psi, like he's supposed to. Besides, you've got some thick ole steel there. Like I said, if he's got a legit shop, i think it's not a bad deal. Try googling it, there's a TON of info out there regarding media and warping.

First thing I noticed was the weld beads, grind them flush before you get it blasted, primer, plastic will bond better to a totally blasted area. Has the guy that gave you the quote done VINTAGE CARS? Ask to see one. The best blaster on the East Coast is American Dry stripping in Milford, Ct. I don't think the $750. quote is off base IF he has done quality work for others.

  19. Dave,
FWIW, American Stripping in Manassas, VA, quoted $600 to sandblast my body (well, actually my model A body ) ~ a year ago. That's toward the higher end of the reasonability spectrum, but they eased my warpage concerns by showing me some other old bodies- a '74 Datsun 240Z and a small-window Beetle they'd just finished blasting. Both were STRAIGHT.

They'll also prime (either etching or epoxy) in their spray booth.

    Here's their website: http://www.ascoweb.com/about.htm

    Hope this helps,
    -Gary

  20. Paid $900 two years ago to have frame and all body parts of the '38 PU done by a pro shop. He picked up and delivered the 75 mile round trip too for that price.

I can't see the pics ( I am sitting in the middle of nowhere East of Fremont, NE using my work laptop).:(

I am planning on doing the outside of my 40 with a Makita 9227 and hook and loop 80 grit disks, and then getting the inside blasted.

I would think that your body and doors would not take too long to do, and it sure beats using chemical stripper.

Of course if you have to buy the sander, it's still cheaper than $700.00 and you can control it (use less than 1,000 RPM) and you won't warp anything.

I just paid $30.00 for the local guy to do my dash....took them 30 minutes.

I use Norton 8" hook and loop (they are blue), 80 grit.

They do a great job and last a long time.

I think any 80 grit disk would work, the blue h&l Nortons are very high quality.

    Part number is: 23591 (66261123591).

I have not done my whole car yet, but have done some of it and it goes pretty fast and the 80 grit gives a good tooth for primer.

    Hope this helps.

I specialize in blasting antique sheetmetal down here in Norfolk. For an example I charge $100 an hour for blasting. The last Model A coupe I did took about 5.5 hours. This car was also nearly rust and bondo free. This was the body tub, fenders, floor, doors, deck lid and garnish mouldings. I always blast with a lower pressure and use a very hard material so I don't get heat build up and order it with a gentle grit so the the metal is not gouged.

Rusty areas, lots of bondo or thick paints are the time killers and I have spent near 10 hours on some early ford jobs.

I would break out the sanders and go at it. It would save cash and since its only
the outside of the body its a one day job. As for frames I use flap discs and a
    wire wheel.

I'd use a 4 1/2" knotted wire wheel on an agle grinder for the frame/ firewall, and a DA sander on the body. You'll save a bunch of money doing it yourself. If you buy a sander, sand paper, angle grinder, and a knotted wire wheel you would still only be around $150.

Jim at ASCO does fantastic work. he has done 2 jeeps, and I just got my shoebox back from him last week.

they're real pros, they quote a week and its done in a week. he'll use media appropriate for the job. and its an inside operation, no sand pit like so many people.

no warpage on my ford or anything else I've taken there over the years.

I'm in Tampa, FL and I found a guy who would do a 31 Model A frame for $125 and the entire body (inside, outside, bottom, doors) for only $400. Hunt around!
