A guy here has two AOD's for sale. I have a C4 302 in my 53. How much trouble would it be to swap the C4 with a AOD? How much bigger is the case size of the AOD over the C4? Thanks
The bell housing bolt pattern is the same, but the lugs for the bolt holes are thicker than the C4, so you may need longer bolts. Not exactly sure of the length difference, but you'll probably need to relocate the ****** mount. The .67 overdrive really drops your revs on the road, I'm mainly using mine in third as it drops my flathead below the powerband. Flatman
The trans mount is a couple of inches further aft. The overall length of the transmission is less than an inch longer. My roadster uses the same driveshaft. Bellhousing and transmission are a little bigger in every direction. In my roadster, we needed some work on the floor, a crossmember, etc. Also, unlike the C4, the AOD really depends on the throttle position (kickdown) cable to work. It was substantial work, but the car runs well. It has a lower rear gear for zippy performance in town, and taller overall gear than before on the highway. Overall, I think it was worth the effort.
be sure if you go with the aod that you set the t.v. pressure with a gauge as described in the shop manual or you will burn the transmission up. just got done doing one in my son's 63 unibody and worked out great
Yes indeed. Who do you recommend to set that up? Im putting together a 51 Merc for my friend soon w/ a 302/AOD but have always been scared of the TV setup on those. Always heard like it was a one shot deal before total destruction of the trans.
I think somebody on the HAMB mentioned a few months back about a shop in AZ or TX that had some useful info for setting up the AOD, but at that time I did not take enough notice of the detail.
Thanks Another question, I found out the two AOD's the guy has came from a 94 T-bird and a 94 Mustang. Can those be used on a car without a computer?
I think those are probably AOD-E, but check this month's Popular Hot Rodding for an article about an aftermarket setup with a stand alone computer. Of course, it costs something, but it might be a good setup.
