You can buy the 1-wire regulator and install it yourself. Not sure where to get it, but I have seen them around, just can not recall at the moment.

If you install yourself, the only trick is to use a toothpick to hold the brushes back until it is ***embled, then pull the tothpick out the hole in rear of case. rest of process is simple bolt/unbolt.

You can also make your existing internal regulator 3-wire to be sort-of 1-wire by adding a jumper from the hot lead to the plug, the one on the plug with the bigger wire, not the small (brown?) one. The small wire is not used, but you will lose your idiot light. Just install a volt gage or ammeter and look at it occasionally.

I purchased a rebuild alternator from the local parts store that supplied 63 amps, then got a replacement connector that plugs into the alternator and looped the red wire back to the battery post on the alternator and cut off the field wire, ran a new wire from my battery post on the alternator to the starter and connected it to the same post as the hot(+12) cable from the battery itself.

MY HEI is powered through my igntion switch so when I turn off the ignition I kill all power to the HEI and don't have to worry about the "run on" problem of current feeding back through to the HEI and allowing the motor to continue to run even with the key off.

With this setup if you are out on the road and your alternator dies, you can pick up one from any source and not worry about it being 1 wire. BUT I only have the one wire running from my alternator.

This setup works well for me and I have been driving about two months on it. With several trips of a couple of hours at night with the headlights on.

We were one wiring them long before you could buy one. Just follow the simple instructions already provided. I think any parts store would have them in stock. I have seen chrome and powder coated ones at the swap meets for under $100
