The final tranny will be with shift kit and torque converter. Poll ends Saturday. I'd like to thank Dave again for this. He has been nothing but incredible... I can hardly believe his generosity.
Wow, the results are suprising... around here AOD's are the spawn of Satan, noone wants one... hmmmmmm.... Jay
I say use what the donator has the most of, if it's going to be an automatic anyone should work just fine. --------- Injectors
AOD, is Automatic Over Drive right? Like a 700R? I'd give Roadstar's right nut for overdrive hooked up to my 455.

Ha Ha...I voted C4...though I like AODs just fine, too! A C6 is way overkill and eats up a ton of power...okay for big blocks...maybe Clevelands...but kinda stout behind a 289-302...but indestructable for sure!!! I just like C4s...abuse 'em, bust 'em and swap 'em out...light, cheap and utterly expendable...don't rob any undue power and they do the job!
I'm sure Dave must have the bugs worked out, but as far as AOD's go , they make fine boat anchors. We have been working with Ford Motorsports for over 3 years on AOD's for street rods and even they don't recommend them. We built a beautiful '34 Victoria for a customer and put it behind a donated (by Ford) HP 302. In the last 3 years the car hasn't been driven more than 300 miles, its been in the transmission shop the rest of the time with numerous problems. It seems to be OK now and the customer has it for sale before it goes to hell again. Maybe Dave can shed some light on this from his prespective, the man who does our transmission work is one of the best in this area and the Ford dealers go to him when they can't get a transmission to work right. He's thrown his hands up on this one, nothing he does to it makes it do what it should. Frank
Denise if you have Roadstar's right nut you better give it back, his right wheel might fall off, could cause a lot of damage.
wow, i am also shocked c4/ small/compact/tough, easy to install in confined areas that the vintage stuff seems to always have.
Four-speed top loader! BTW anyone ever heard of a Novak (Sp?) variant of a 4-speed toploader transmission? I hadn't; but a wrecking-yard guy mentioned having one and how much better it is than a regular toploader. I think he's probably full of sh_t, but I'd be interested to know if there is such a tranny.
Just to add to fab32s post, an AOD is very fussy about final adjustments after installing. NO cobble work on the TV linkage at all!!, If this trans is set up properly after install, it can be damn tough. Just think about it, every police car that runs you down or the HO mustangs use them w/ very little problems. However fab32 has a point, this is not a simple bolt in and go trans. If you dont have some sort of tranny experience or know someone that does to properly help you set it up after install, its better to go w/ a C4 or C6. DAVE
I know we're talking auto trannys here, but I'll throw in an annoying write-in vote anyway--hows about a world class T5? (Oh, and though my manual transmission bias is advertised in my sig, I would like to acknowledge that Shifts is being incredibly generous here.)
That cinches it for me[NO COBBLING]Ha! I voted c-6 as Id heard of their durability...An that deal with Denise and tradin Roadstars ...Leeesssssay ...EQUIPTMENT-CRACKS ME UP! That Girl IS Hardcore!
After seeing the polls for wanting a AOD I come to realize there are more Street Rod Bitches on this board that I thought, you are running the car qtr mile and not on the salt flats correct? --------- Injectors
What Shifts said! I've ran an AOD in my '66 Ranchero (Raunchy) for years and swapped to a T-5. I then tried it again in my Shoebox ford and remembered why I pulled it from Raunchy. I just recently pulled it in favor of a C4. The AOD is huge, heavy and produces incredible heat! The shifts are also funky...can't remeber why, but it doesn't alway go thru all four gears. I think it skips first in normal operation. Getting the TV adjusted properly is nearly impossible..even with the Lokar cable setup. My write-in is a World Class T5 with and S10 tailshaft/shifter. Perfect for hotrods. You get 3 pedals, its plenty stout, Overdrive, 5-speeds, relatively cheap. Plus, with the S10 tailshaft/shifter, the shifter is in the right place for hot rods!!!
Oh, I forgot to say I'd choose the C-4 over a C-6. The C6 is indestructable, but the C4 is close to indestructable too and can be built to be very solid. It is light, easy to hook up, and will fit between the rails and floors of even smallest hotrods. No cutting of the floor needed for shoeboxes (unlike c6 or AODs). In fact, its so small (even smaller than a Turbo 350) that there is no need to cut the crossmembers nor the floors on '33-'51 fords. It a great hot rod tranny.
Hmmm...I dropped an AOD into one of my old Fords, hooked up the TV cable and got it about right...then let a trans guy at the Ford dealer check it out. He said I was just about spot-on, and he adjusted it a hair and sent me on my way. The trans worked great, shifted normal and lived behind a fairly stout 302! That said, I'll always prefer a C4...they take the least amount of power to operate, (and so, they build less heat), they're light, cheap, easy to find, and work great. When you scatter one, just stick another in it's place and keep on keepin' on!!
You can run the c4 behind a 6 or a v8.Easy to a just. They will take some what of a beating behind a mild motor. But I do like standard trannys too

I will reiterate what's already been said. The C6 takes too much power to spin and is overkill on a street small block. A C4 can be built to take anything a sreeet small block can dish out. Alot of guys have used the aiod successfully and therte are shops that specialize in buiulding them. I seem to recall a problem getting the aod to run out past 4500 between one of the shifts and the lockup can't take too much abuse. While the newer mustangs do run a variation it is the electonically controlled unit. Not only does the tv cable need to be right but the shifter needs to be indexed to the detents in the tranny too. I read about one guy going through several trannys before he figured out the shifter deal and straightened it out. Still can't beat a stick shift. Toploader or T-5 for performance, or my personal favorite for a cruiser is the 3 speed overdrive. My rpu project will hopefully have the 3 speed overdrive behind the 51 flatty.
Sorry to say but all Ford automatic transmissions are JUNK!!! If I were you I would put in a thm400. You can't go wrong with them!!
