Hiya guys, just wondering as i have not long fitted a ford 302 H.O engine, the engine is from a 1987 car and i have removed all the injection system from it and fitted an edelbrock 600rpm intake manifold and a 600sec vac carb, what i`m looking for is does anyone know what the horsepower might be? .........this is what the engine is now in ; http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=C9QKW8UwqA0 i know i stalled it but this was its 1st test drive with the 302...... ...........many THANKS for you help guys.... ........toad
If it is indeed an '87 HO it is 225 hp and 300 ft/lbs stock regardless of what it came out of. On that note 302/5.0 HO engines were only put in the following cars in 1987. Mustang GT or Lincoln Mark VII LSC. I've seen more than one magazine article where an other wise stock HO with a carb and intake such as yours that made 275-ish hp and 315-ish ft-lbs at the crank. Subtract 15-18% for wheel hp. The 1984 GT350 someone reffered to was nothing special engine wise. It was just a 175 hp 4 barrel carb Mustang GT engine. It was actually a 20th anniversary trim package. My Father own's one and I am a late model Mustang guy in my other car life. As a mater of reference the most powerful carb'd 302/5.0 in the 80's was the '85 Mustang GT 5 speed at 210hp. EFI and different heads came in '86 and power dropped to 200hp. '87 brought new heads and a revised intake and 225 hp. Doyou know what it is out of? Or do you know the firing order? If the firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 it is a HO engine. If it's the other firing order it's a plain p***enger car 302 with 150ish hp. With carb in place of EFI I'd expect 200ish hp. Does it have a roller cam?
cheers guys for all your help, yes it is a H.O. 302 i had it checked out as a friend of mine has all details on chevy/ford ect. engines so gave him the engine number and it is a H.O. 302, i think it come out of a stretched limo........also dipstick in in the sump and not the engine, just asking as someone i know has said that with the edelbrock intake and carb it should be good for 300 horses, so thought i`d ask you guys also, i know there is a way of finding out and thats to have it dyno`d but funds are short at the moment....................all the best guys and thank you for answering my thread.................TOAD
some other things to look for. Either motor will have a roller cam. If yours doesn't, its not the HO at least not of that year. HO also has the double-roller timing chain. Your heads ought to be E7TE on them if its at least an 87. The heads aren't special, they are just the last heads used on the 302 except for the GT40 and GT40p heads found in Explorers/Mountaineers (which would be a far better head) 300hp isn't possible for a carb/intake swap alone. It would take a lot more changes than that to get to 300 Post some pictures and cast numbers
Hi, frank, yes m8 mine does have roller cam and it is E7TE.......the injection system i took off the engine said 5 liter and i`m sure it said H.O. but the H.O. bit i could be wrong m8............but as said in the earlier thread that a m8 has got details for all engines ie engine number tells you what year and model engine you have and i gave him the engine number and he told me it IS a H.O. engine...........hope i`m being helpful with this...........TOAD..................ps...........i`m known as toad here in the UK but could only get the TOADY username .........
Casting numbers mean close to nothing when it comes to Ford for identifying an engine as HO or not. In '85 or '86 a castign update was completed that made all 302 block roller capable. Not all 302's got the roller cam. If it got a roller cam it is most liekly an HO. Some Crown's got roller cam's with the non-HO firing order. Only HO engines got the HO firing order which is the same as the 351W and the one I referenced earlier. I am sorry to say that if it came out of a Limo I am 99.99999999999% positive it is NOT a HO engine. Have you confirmed that it has a roller camshaft? There are 2 push rod lengths. One is flat tappet the other roller. The shorter length is roller. This is a quick way to check without removing the intake. If you had the intake off it, you should have seen what looks like a spider inthe lifter valley holding the kinda X shaped roller lifter ties onthe lifters. If it wasn't there it is not a roller cam engine and not a HO. There is also the possibility it did not come out of a limo. As far as 300 hp goes. A carb and intake swap alone won't get you there, but add roller rocker arms, a mild cam (B303 or TF1 sounds mean and won't beat up the valve train) and decent headers will put you very, very close to 300 if not over. Add almost any aftermarket heads to the above parts and you WILL have over 300 hp.
If it is an HO you also have forged pistons. The '87 and '88 HO motors had TRW forged pistons from the factory. Later cars got hypereutectic pistons.
The '85, maybe '86 and all '87-'91 HO's got the forged pistons. Starting in '92 the hypereutectics took over in all versions of the 5.0.
CHEERS! it looks like it IS a H.O. engine then as for out of a limo that i cant be sure of so maybe i`m wrong on that one..............guys you have all been very very helpful and i thank you for all the knowledge you have just given me............many thanks.................TOAD
