I assumed it was for A/C or something but someone mentioned to me it may have been a supercharger pulley so I thought I would ask, it takes a huge belt and doesn't line up with the idler pulley or anything else the engine came with, by the way im talking about the big ass one on the end of the crank....thanks for any input!
ya an olds guy looked at it in my garage and said he thought it was for a S/C and that it could be rare so I thought I better find out!
I never paid alot attention to the old Olds engines but I have saw Damper/Pullies like that on Industrial Engines. Bob
Do you know any history about the engine? If it was pulled out of a car then most likely an overdriven supercharger. If it was industrial or you don't know the history, then probably a hydraulic pump or a water/generator stand alone engine. I've seen Hemi's & 427 FE's that way. My best guess. Movin/on
Since there is an idler pulley on the engine, I am thinking it's for an A/C car. I have never heard of Olds engines being use in industrial or agricultural applications. But a blower is always apossibility.
no, its stock. one belt goes idler, crank, waterpump, another belt goes crank waterpump generator. another goofy oldsmobile innovation! hahaha
that's true but the crank has a pulley that has the two normal grooves in it for the standard setup you mentioned, and then the third on the end is the huge one that takes a belt that's about three times as big as the other two..
my 53 desoto hemi has one. The generator is bolted to the intake with no adjustment. You pull the Tensioner pulley out to tighten the belt. The Olds must have a solid mount generator also.
I was thinkin the same thing.. not the tensioner here guys I know what that does.. CRANK PULLEY lol....
GMC trucks used Olds engines in the 50s. If that engine came out of a GMC truck the wide pulley was to run a air compressor for air brakes. Small GMC's used Pontiac's and the HD trucks had Olds in them. And the compressors used wide belts like that.
you're the closest so far... it goes like this; 1 belt goes around the crank pulley, idler pulley, and water pump. the other belt goes around the water pump pulley and the generator pulley. my brother's '52 303 has that same setup, they used it '49 to '53 i believe.
Is Evans is correct about the wide groove crank pulley being used for a truck air brake compressor, then there will be a return oil fitting somewhere on the engine, plus a oil feed line fitting also. Those compressors always used the engine's oil pressure for the compressor.
You know it looks to me like the whole crank pulley (balancer and all) is from something else, see the pic attached. Also, in your second pic it looks like the timing pointer is being pushed out of the way by the balancer. My engine has the early single belt crank pulley and the "big and little" two belt water pump pulley.
