    Long story short....

My dad was a x navy man out of the cold war days... got out and got a GI bill that put him in some fancy mechanic school in arizona... He worked there and in California I believe for awhile... skipping forward a few.. he meet my mom who lived in Louisiana... got married and started a business in the late 60s...after moving to Louisiana. called
Joes Texaco... all around service station... He was really well known for his carbureator tunning abilities... and still is... The business was a booming one for him and he stayed busy and employed a few young guys and an old drunkerd arlester who I think was an fairly old one armed black man with a fro...only pic I saw of him.. Dad made frequent trips to the jail house to bail him out. but dad said he was a good man. couple teen guys that ran parts for him ... parts truck was a 60s f100 ... like mine... alls well.. one day in 68 working late at night he was working on a car just outside the garage doors... when someone pulled in and fired off several rounds at my dad... 2 catching him in the head. one over the left ear and one just further up... Mom was inside (they lived in an apartment built into the back of the shop) just ***umed it was a car backfireing... little while later.. supper was done and she called for him just to find him laying on the concrete in a pool of blood... never caught the guy... My dad went through comatose states and didnt speak for along time... when he finally did come around he only said one word "smokey" his dog. Doc said he would never really talk, walk, or have much motor function... turns out he was wrong... Dad was paralyzed on his right side due to the one just above the ear... but he managed to get up and walk and before you knew it he was back working on cars.. but not the same old way. He had to sell out the business to one of the young guys working there who still runs a shop in town... Dad worked on carbureators for YEARS all the dealerships sent people to dad... well obviously in the mid 80s carbs went away. and so business trickled away. to lawn mowers motorcycles fourwheelers and boats.... did this for as along as I know. Remember he only had 1 arm that works... rebuilding any carb. with two hands is fuss enough. Ive seen him tear down engines and **** I cant do two handed... WELL 3 years ago. dad was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. just about 6 months after I moved 3 hours away... ****ED...He had been having a rough time recouping and he hasnt been walking well.. he is 75 now... but still manages his own... So last year I decided I was going to build a hot rod with my dad and For my dad... so obviously the only stories that stuck in my head were the young guys at the shop ripping gears in the f100 in the parkin lot. and Arlester the drunk. .. so what else would I build but an f100... His was aqua ... i dont particularly like aqua! so Im going with a low gloss black... but thought Id work a version of the color into the truck.. and do a logo on the doors like a shop truck with something like Joes texaco full service station on the door.

Im pretty creative, I am a graphics and Video editor for a PBS station... but when it comes to some of the art work Ive seen ... I would have to say I wouldnt touch it!

Can any of you guys help me out? Ideas? Thoughts?

just to let ya know... My dad has "Supervised the build" and has helped out on the motor... and I TRY! to watch him but he is one of those that just do it... When we put the motor in the truck EVERYBODY said man good luck timing that thing... guys around here were telling me horror stories ... you need to put a chevy motor in that ... ford engines are a hard as @#% to time.. I dont know!! I am a chevy guy so fords spooked me! well heck Dad and I had the motor in... set it up where he wanted it... he pushed the distro in... fell right in... he moved it... said fire it up. Fired right up.. checked the timing was dead on... he also set the carb up before we put it on the engine... needless to say.. it worked like a charm. I dont know how.. but hes good. ****! ive seen guys on tv catchin engines on fire! and restling with the timing... whatever they just need to hire my dad lol. ok.. no more advertising for my dad... call joe 555 6463. lol just kidding.

I greatly appreciate your time and help.

Thought a pic of my dad and father in law would help...
My father in law actually purchased this truck and
2 others. He is building an old putter truck out of a 61 f100.

Dad on the left "supervising" and father in law on right "graciously torquing the spark plugs to dads specs" yep he loves that torque wrench...no not the one in his hands that one wasnt good enough lol he ended up giving me a Snap on from his old shop...
That one my father in law is using is a NAPA 25 dollar tool... worked for me!?!!?!?

but the snap on is nice.

if you look close at his right ear you can see a scar on it where another bullet grazed it...
just another tid bit. on the left side where a bullet went through the ear and grazed the skull..... in that same spot I have a birth mark... turned my hair black.. no kiddin ill take a picture if you want most people just think I stuck a pen behind my ear. FREAKY weird. and cool. all though Im getting a gray hair or three popping up in it. dang it. im only 27!

I would say your dad is a bit of a national Icon. Kinda like a rocky balboa of the small business man.Im not aa logo designer, but that story shows a lot of guts, determination and p***ion. i would keep it simple, like a real texaco logo with a simple saying, like " the workin mans servise station"

Yeah, well... he has been an inspiration for some people who have had strokes and other brain injuries...

I dont know about national Icon but local good guy with a wrench definitely... of course hes my hero. lol. not so much when I was a teenager and he was chasing me with a cane switch tho.. lol.

He has always been known for helping the little guy... there was 1 guy that practically stayed at the house... he didnt have a job and mainly cut down trees and brush... he drove a mid 60s huptie of a chevy truck.. several colors of blue... had no money... but dad always kept him going...sometime buying the parts for him... in return the guy did stuff around the house for him that he couldnt do... there was always the little old lady whos car wouldnt run or lawn mower that didnt work... he just fixed it. never asked for much.... Id say I learned alot of good work ethic and life lessons from him.

Spent some time today talking to my dad... got a few Ideas...
here is an old texaco logo he had used... only it was more linear and busy.
thought I would simplify the old texaco logo he had and threw in some text.
    What do you think?

This one has the green in it... dads truck was this color green... and the old texaco logo T was green... thought I might take that old cl***ic aqua green and put it on the inside of the truck. to pay tribute to his old one.

used in a promotional deal with little die cast air planes.

    not sure... but its cool.

as you can see the logos T changes from blues to greens.
So I dont feel like im anti Texaco if I go with an aqua color...pea green...
ish like color. lol. Im going to have to take an old pic and try and match a color to it.

Smoothies or stocks in the same green as the Texaco T and interior... also matches my dads old shop truck.

Yeah that molding was in the original picture I photoshoped it out on the others... that molding isnt even 65 appropriate.. its 64 maybe even 63. the molding on the 65s are A lot better looking.... I dont really plan to put molding on but I do really like the 65 66 trim package.

I showed my wife the options she didnt think the green or aqua or blue whatever the color comes out to be. matched too well. I would say it would be my 3rd choice but I like what it stands for... but if it doesnt look good. im not all for it. The red looks nice but of course that look is over done. but I do like it. I also wouldnt do hub caps I would do a spyder ring and bullet caps and lug nuts. and beauty ring.

How about replacing the T with a Stromberg or something like that, since he specialized in carbs or put it over the T...

    65,

I created this Logo to go on the cowling on my 31' , the original owner was a friend of my fathers, who flew Avengers in the pacific during WW2.

If you could incorporate a Texaco logo and a military memorial... this is the logo i created or you could make a license plate topper ...

I'd do him a big favor, go with the aqua.

And of course whatever your door art is, a carburetor would be his forte.
