straight six stainless headers , i need a beating!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Cajun Kenny, Sep 23, 2008.

  1. now im not gonna go off on a rant because maybe the owner is a HAMBer and hopefully
they will make this right , first off i didnt use the alliance , which i should have
and then i would have had the entire weight of the HAMB behind me , yes i deserve a beating!
now i have in the past purchased my share of stainless steel headers and i have never come across
this problem before , my first responce was if it was for one of my bikes i would return them..
i have seen other engines with stainless headers but this is my first straight six i ever really
gave a damn about , gas prices being what they are i thought i would try and build something
someone back in the day would have done (maybe not the headers) but yall understand what im quackin
    about , heres the pics..

im not sure if the flanges will work because of the piss poor welds being so large
im really not sure they will seal , im sure a grinder will take care of this but
should i really have to ?????????

these are the welds on the bends , im not sure if you can mandrel bend stainless
am i being to **** about this? , the pictures dont do the welds justice ,
they actually look like **** , now im not building a showcar , im goin with doin
a driver that looks nice and maybe hit a show here and there ..

i could have purchased the fentons and the cost between the fentons and the stainless
was not that much more , now im thinkin i should have bought the fentons , as far as
blueing is concerned im not really worried about that , but i think the welds will
eventually rust ,im not sure about the welds?? and i think that would
void the whole concept of goin stainless in the first place..
    such
is life . should i lower my exspectations?? i dont feel i got what i paid for.. via la HAMB!

I bought the black ones from them. $133. I should've just built my own. The welds were ****ty. I just sanded them and repainted them. You definitely get what you pay for.

Yeah, unless you paid 5 bucks for those or something... you got ripped. What really gets me is the weld in the first primary tube. I've never seen something like that from a reputable header builder. Hell... even from most homemade jobs for that matter.

I'd like to know which company "really" produced that thing.

  12. yeah i paid way more than 5 bones for these , the welds are really piss poor and the pictures really dont do them justice , i will make an attempt at returning them and from now on i will use the alliance , its not my first ****up ever ..

As far as mandrel bending stainless, of course it can be. BUT you cannot make two bends that close to each other as there is no room for the bend clamps. Usually the rule of thumb when I am doing prototypes for production (part of what I do for a living) is 3" between bends, therefore welding to create that shape is acceptable. As far as the weld quality well, it's a bit rough unless they were cheap. As far as rust goes, it appears from the pictures that they used stainless rod, so that shouldn't be a problem.
The flanges - it's not uncommon for many companies to place a weld bead and then surface grind or mill them and used that ridge for sealing, ****** does that for instance.
Overall those look like bargain ba*****t pieces, but they may not have any actual issues in use.

Don't feel too bad... I've got a drawer full of ****ty parts i've bought. Just to get use out of the ones I couldn't return for whatever reason, I just weld em into some sort of trinket for the shop. If you can't get your money back for those... you could always support a shelf or mailbox with 'em. I've done that before with **** headers. Looks kinda cool... or bolt 'em to the side of your fridge in the shop... the list goes on... if you can't get money back for them, do something fun with 'em.

  16. that makes sense to me , i didnt say they couldnt be fixed with a grinder but i did pay a decent amount of coin for these and i do and feel that that should have been a little better .. thanks for the input , it puts another perspective on things man..

I had a set of those on my car last year. I didn't have any problems with them. The welds on mine looked better than those ones though. I sold them on e-bay for more than I paid for them new.

  21. I am sorry but there are 12 year old blind Chinese girls that can weld better than that...........and they take more pride in their work! That pile of **** is not worth 20 bucks.

  22. thanks Tman thats what i was thinkin all along!!

Hey Kenny, my five year old, Duncan, can lay a weld better than that...hell, he could probably put a bunch of tacks and make it look better. I've been teaching him to weld over the past year, and he's good. If I were you, I would send them back for a refund, and use the Alliance to by a good pair. Just explain to them that you've been away, now your back, and it doesn't meet the quality that you expected. I would even pay the shipping back to them for a full refund. Keep us posted!!
