Need a straight six identified..

    I have a chevy straight six but am not sure what size it is. I cant find any casting numbers online for the straight sixes, but im sure somebody on here knows what it is. If you know of a website with straight six casting numbers on it respond with it please.
    Here is the casting number:39221 968 and under the it had 56

    I can't find that number, could you maybe tell us more about where you found it on the engine? a picture of the engine would be a very big help. Also if there are numbers stamped on the pad where the distributor goes in, those would also be a big help.

    I dont have a picture of it. I found the number on the side just above the side covers.

    Above the side covers? Sounds like you got the number off the cylinder head, rather than the block.

    the numbers we need are the ones cast into the block by the starter, and the ones by the distributer

    OH! ooops my bad. I wont be able to get the other numbers untill i go down to my gramps house this weekend. By any chance do you guys have a site you can give me a link to so i wont have to repost this??

    no it was two 2's and spaced out how i had it.

    If the distributor is in about the "center" of the block then it's of the 216-235-261 era. If the distributor is more towards the "front" of the block then it's 194-215-230-250-292 style (much better engine). I'm talking 1940's forward, not backward.

    Side covers? Sounds like a 230/250/292. The 216/235/261 had a one-piece side cover.

    There's also the fuel pump location to tell the difference between the 194-230-250 and the 292; 292's have the fuel pump mount aft of the p***enger side motor mount.
