Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Aug 7, 2008.

  1. WELL THANK GOD THERE WAS SOME ONE OLDER THEN ME KATFISH.

    64 Great Lakes boot
65 Great Lakes FT school. TAD USS Sierra (D&S tender) TAD USS Midway? TAD Quantanimo,USS Beale DD471, Nam bound
66 Chelsea Naval Hosp, TAD First Naval Dist.,Tad Newport RI, USS Glover AGDE 1 (spy can,yup ,the one with the turbine instead of screws)
Got clocked by a torpedo man 3rdwith a monkey fist going into dry dock. She was in for a year while they put on all the spy gear. They fiberglassed my head back together and back to duty after a month in Chelsea.
TAD USS Garcia 1 mo. at sea.
67 back in Chelsea Hosp and then they decided to retire me early.
68 back over to First ND then I got to keep a sub from sinking for a month while the paper work went through. Just me and 2 FN's 24 on 48 off and no one else except yourself onboard. Really eerie.
All that in less then 4 years!

    USS Fletcher DD 992

The further I get from these years the better they were. I try to tell the kids these days how much fun it is to drink and chase women all over the world but they just don't get it. Too bad. They are really missing out on something.

Yeah I bought some stuff from Mr H speed shop back then. Haven't thought about that place till you mentioned it. I was building the 351C in my '70 Torino. Never made it to the drag strip. I was there thru the winter. I did some cruising in the Shelby Forest park. Some cool stuff back then! -Mike

  8. My father was a photo-journalist aboard USS Lexington (CV-16) ... 1955-1957 ... and
the coupe's interior was done in 1957 by C.A. HALL Auto Tops of Oakland, CA while he
    was stationed at NAS Alameda:

    ______________________________________________

My younger brother was a "brown-shoe" officer aboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) ... flying
C7F staff & other VIPs around in his "Sea Pig" in the late 80's & during Desert Storm:

    April 1990 - Indian Ocean.jpg

... later he was a Helicopter flight instructor at NAS Whiting Field in Milton, Florida ... and
he ended his Navy career as the Hangar Bay and Flight Deck officer aboard USS Bataan
    (LHD-5) ... during her pre-commissioning (1996-1997).
    ______________________________________________

Me ... I never served in any of our country's armed forces ... but I kinda feel like I'm in
the Navy ... since 1987, I have been working with US Navy Command & Control Systems.

As as Software, Systems, Fleet Support, & Product Deployment Engineer; I've had the
honor of traveling all over the world installing systems at US Navy sites (CONUS, Hawaii,
    Europe, Japan, & Bahrain) ... and on platforms (AGF's, BB's, CG's, CV's, CVN's, DDG's,
    LCC's, LHA's, LHD's, SSN's, & SSGN's) ... back in the late 80's, I even had the privilege
of performing installs & providing training aboard all four of our WWII vintage battleships
(now museums) ... USS Iowa (BB-61), USS New Jersey (BB-62), USS Missouri (BB-63), &
    USS Wisconsin (BB-64).

I've also had my fair share of ship rides ... including some on now decommissioned ships
    like USS New Jersey (BB-62):

    BB-62 Feb 88.jpg
    ... and USS America (CV-66):

    CV-66 May 89.jpg

Somehow, I've ridden ships on both sides of the equator, but still remain a WOG (never
crossed it) ... I've yet to experience a "Trap" on a carrier ... though I have a couple of
COD flight "Cats" to tell my grandkids about some day.

Well, that's enough about my "pseudo service" ... let me offer a sincere thank you to
all of you HAMBers that actually serve or served our country!

Sadly info from my old ship, that its going to be 'sunk'. Surprisingly I discovered it on the web several years ago. It was being made sea worthy for a naval museum. after much effort by dedicated people it had gained some progress towards that goal and was trying to obtain some monetary support from grants. While it was anchored near Rainier Ore. some crackheads were discoverd cutting it up for scrap to buy dope. damage was so bad its not feasable to restore now. google LST 1166 to read about its journey.

Lots of fun, but I sure do miss the free JP-5 cologne, that was always so kindly included in my showers.

May 1973 to October 1980 and October 1981 to October 1985. Flew RF-8Gs (USS America) and F-14s (USS Constellation) out of Miramar then instructed TA-4J's in Texas and adversary flying A-4E's out of Subic. Enjoyed the flying but hated being away from the garage when I was "big, gray and underway"!

Ya only 'think' pukes and wingnuts are better cuz your flight line was always where ya left it.
But never fear, the Navy built a ship just for you guys...

Fishtank, when did the Air Force get a ship? Just like always, they built the golf course first and let the other things fit in as they can.
