I'm wanting to install an FM antenna that will not be visibally apparent and is note a retracting "mast". Someone used to make a product that you taped to the inside of the windshield. It was an attempt to look like the OEM antennas imbedded in the laminated gl***. I plan to attach it to the gl*** behind the painted out edge. It needs to be thin and flat.
Any leads to such would be welcomed.

  2. Go to radio shack, they have one you can run under carpet, in door panels or in your trunk.

the major parts stores, like Autozone and Advanced sell a couple of different styles

  5. What kind of car are you running?

I always thought I'd stick a standard junkyard fixed length modern antenna vertically inside the Wescott body of my roadster.

Several out of the way places it could go.

I mounted a regular auto antenna under the gl*** running board on my pickup. Works great on FM, not so great on AM.

Dakota Digital makes one called the "Untenna" It's amplified and sticks to the sheetmetal inside the car.

  8. I know that portable radios play ok in steel bodied cars.

It helps if you keep them above the top of the dash line.

An antenna may work the same.

I used to have a regular fixed antenna mounted horizontally inside my bumper. It worked pretty good.

    Thanks guys!
I'll check the several sources ya'll have suggested.
I have heard that antennas under gl*** (regular gl*** or fibre type) works okay for FM. Works inside convertibles and fabric top inserts too. I'm doin this thing on a '56 Ford so I got no fibregl***.

Take the coax cable from an antenna. Cut the antenna end off. Strip off the coating. Be very careful & tuck the fine inner wire between your window & weatherstrip & ground the braided outer cable. Plug the antenna into your radio. **** free hidden antenna.
I did this on my Dad's "A" sedan & used foil tape to tape the fine inner wire to the header wood. Works better than the factory antenna in my pickup.
Just make sure the inner wire is not grounded.

  14. Watch the parts store antennas, the cable connection tends to be loose and wiggling the cable greatly changes the reception.

I like that. Wished I'd thought of that. I ***ume the layout of the wire does not have to be symmetrical, like two legs of equal distance on either side of the connector. Right?????? I'm gonna give it a try

Any car audio shop worth its salt should carry a Metra brand hideable antenna with the part # 44-UA20 OR 44-UA200. The UA-200 has dual band amplifers which in my experience works a litte better for picking up AM signals. Either of these antennas are conceilable or can be mounted to the inside of the windshield. I have installed many of them on hot rods, restos, and everyday cars with very good success.

    Heres a link for each...

    Hope this helps!
