  1. Another GREAT but short lived cop show deserving of a mention was Police Squad.

Oh yeah ,I remember M squad with Lee Marvin. He drove a '57 Ford that he crashed in to trash cans at the beginning of the show and then got out shooting.Police squads opening was a parody of that. I remember one episode of M squad that had a young Burt Reynolds in it as "hood'. He was making zip guns in shop class.

  4. I have a good friend that provided all the cars for production when it was filmed in Chicago. I have a pic somewhere of a '59 Ford done up in early '60's Chicago police livery.

    Very cool show!

  5. Up from the dead...

Did Dennis Farina drive a gold-ish Desoto, like a 58, in season two? I saw a car over the weekend in storage that he reportedly drove in season two.

All I remember is the black Chrysler 300.

  7. Crime story rocked!!! Wish the cops could beat the truth out of the scumbags today and get away with it. Note that I said scumbags and not innocent civilians like what usually happens....

I remember the show, but can't for the life of me remember have seen any Chryslers or any other Mopars in it. I only remember seeing a lot of '58 Fords indeed.
Or maybe they just didn't air the 2nd season overhere where I live.
I'll need to score me some DVD's I guess.

  13. So far as I know it was always the Chrysler 300, although there was one goofy episode he ends up driving a commandeered '60 Plymouth 2dr hardtop that was done up as a hot rod, not really period correct if I remember right, bright yellow - that was in the second season.

Most of the Chicago patrol cars were 1959 and 1960 Ford sedans.

When Media Play closed I got both seasons dirt cheap - plus there was a rebate deal in the first one if you bought the second one - so I have maybe $20 in the two sets. Quality of them is lousy though.

Both co-creator Chuck Adamson and Farina were Chicago cops, and John Santucci (Pauli) was, per the liner notes, "one of Chicago's most nortorious career criminals" before his role on the show.

One of the reasons I got hooked besides the cars and all was that it was serialized, they didn't wrap up a complete story in 45 minutes plus commercials. Eventually they had to do away with that to some extent and do more stand-alone episodes, but for the most part the serial carries through to the end.

from the liner notes for the second season:

Dude, I thought I was the only one who watched this show. Me and my dad used to watch it. My dad loved it. I loved listening to the opening credits. That was the coolest opening credits song for a TV show ever (Runaway by Del Shannon).

I really liked Crime Story. I see the actors now on Closer and other shows but they will always be Luca and Sgt. Terillo to me. Del Shannon was on several talk shows when Crime Story was airing. He saw it as a possible comeback opportunity that they had used "Runaway" as the theme song. He even released a single that I thought was quite good but it went nowhere. I was always a fan of his music ( I have all of his singles and albums) but alas ,it just wasn't meant to be. He was found dead in a hotel room that he was performing at. It was reported as an accidental over dose. When you're at the top, it's hard to come down.

  16. Crime Story was a cool show, never missed it. When it was in Chi-town it was the best. Cool nite shots, cool cars and cool music and cool actors. I've got a lot of the episodes on VHS.

  17. Man I loved that show - iyt was the only one around with the kinda rides/period that I loved !!

    Krazy !!

Loved the show, but I liked Private Eye better.

I never have understood why Private Eye has never really ever been seen since.

I have both seasons of Crime Story on DVD and have been looking for a copy of Private Eye but it doesn,t seem to be available.
    Both were great shows.
I think the big writers strike in Hollywood killed Private Eye.

  21. Yup, watched it every week. Came about in an odd time in my life. The show was a good antidote.

yeah, got them at amazon. Thanks and I am glad this got started I had forgotten all about Crime Story. Great show.

  25. Loved the show, and the credits. The theme song had one line that was different than the original release of Runaway. A friend once emailed me a link playing the two and pointing out the difference. I don't remember the difference exactly, but I think the new one changed one of the lines to something like, "some may live while others die".

WOW, havent thought about that for quite some timew,

"Anyone remember "M Squad" with Lee Marvin?"

M Squad, Dragnet, The Naked City, Highway Patrol w/Brodrick Crawford, and there was one, I think it was called "The Sheriff of Cochise". It always started out with the patrol car door opening and showing a Model 94 Winchester in a gun rack on the drivers door. Oh so long ago that those shows were on.

Love the episode of Private Eye where the Merc gets stolen and painted yellow. The look on his face was priceless.

  30. I used to watch it back home in England, excellent show...maybe available on DVD?

    Try Netflicks...
