This gold Lincoln is a little too much over the top, too many Caddy bullets and the Lincoln bezels should of been replaced. Just how I see it. It's cool if you like them over the top........................

I know it's owned by a Bisbane area guy. Possibly called Little Mick. Jimmy B will no doubt will confirm how accurate or otherwise I am.

It's way too garish for me though.

Only thing I have seen that looks a bit like one is this prototype photo made in 1947... (mercury, not Lincoln)

Paul kelly just emailed me that the green Lincoln is owned by a guy named Paul Kelly... but not the same Paul Kelly as the one who built the gorgeous 48 Hudson... just happend to have the same name and also love custom cars... what are the odds...

Gene winfield worked on the car when he was on a short tour in Australia some time ago.

A few more shots of it...

I'm not particular a fan of the headlight treatment. The Buick headlights might look good. But I think they are positioned to high up in the fenders. The top line of the fender now does not flow with the hood line no more... but thats just my opinion.

Paul Kelly photos... (not the owner)

  8. Thanks.
I have already spoken to Jimmy B.
    Paul Kelly aye..

I am keen on the headlight treatment as I would like to do
a similiar thing on my Lincoln.

Gene was in Australia for two days

One of the day's the Lincoln was chopped, all cutting and fabrication was done.
And major sections welded in place...

Aden Jacobi did some artwork of the frontal changes while the chop was
    underway

Thanks for the name info guys, mental note taken now. I had a hunch it might have been the one Gene W. worked on. It does have that Little Mick 'too much' look about it though.

Rikster I agree with you. The fender crowns don't flow naturally enough from the headlights and I think they're also too far in from the outside fender line.

They are pretty rare cars even as a four door - I saw one my whole life!
There were also nice looking coupes and cabrios. These had the V8-60 motor.

I think what looks odd on the Lincolns - aside from the headlight treatment - is the epically huge amount of overhang in front of the front wheels. Throws it all off.

i spent about 45 minutes walking around that green lincoln drooling, didnt know gene winfeild had been around it in the build, i love the paint, i dont really mind the lincoln fronts but, they look quite futuristic for 49.
that french baby merc is cool too, ive never heard of them.

I've got two. A all-original and pretty solid 50 Cosmopolitan with all the options including the rear window wiper, and a 49 baby Lincoln parts car that I am stripping.

Anybody chopping a Lincoln or Merc top, send me a PM and let's see if we can make a deal on my top and the tops of my doors.

Yeah, and there is PLENTY of room under the hood to swap in pretty much anything you want. I bought mine thinking I would put a 7.3 turbo diesel in it,auto overdrive,ac,cruise control, etc, and then restore the body right down to the original deep maroon paint with wide whitewall radials, and then have the coolest tow car in the world. Then I started getting sick and had to stop making road trips.

I first saw that car in a cl***ic '50's French gangster movie (Jean Gabin, I believe was the well known character actor) . I couldn't believe my eyes. I had always thought the Merc and baby LIncoln were the only cars that ever had that dog leg detail on the door. It was on the screen for a long time, and you could see the car from many angles. Good looking car.

    Hey,

The Ford Vedette started life as "The Little Ford". As early as 1941, Edsel
Ford, Henry's son, saw the need for a ''little & big Ford" in the Ford product
line up. Ford designer E.T Gregorie started design work on the ''little Ford"
and the tooling was ready for post war production. Ford Motor Company
was in serious trouble after 1945. With Edsel dead, Henry nearly dead and
the company in serious money trouble, something had to be done, and quickly! New management desided that the "little Ford" was just too little
for post war America. The design and tooling was shipped off to Ford of
France, to become the Vedette. The "little Fords" place in the American
markets product line would become the 1949 Ford a.k.a. the Shoebox.
The 1949 Mercury design was originally to be a Ford design, later changed
into a Mercury. The "intersting" sunken headlamp doors on the 1949-51
Lincoln & Cosmo models came about when Ford/Lincoln Mercury engineer-
ing couldn't get the hidden headlamp design to work, and instead opted
for the fixed sunken headlamp door design. The "fastback" design was
considered for all Ford/Lincoln/Mercury models, and clays were built for
all models. In the end, only the Lincoln and Mercurys were built.

    Missed this somehow...

Here's my old 1949 Cosmo coupe I sold a few years back. 351 Cleveland powered. Chopped 4 inches, ditched the B pillar, 54 DeSoto grille fit with no modifications!
