Looking at rebuilding my belly button 350sbc and came across these guys offering a 383 stroker 4 bolt short engine kit for $1200.

    http://www.larrysperformance.com/data/assemkits.html

Sounds too good to be true so has anyone any experiance of them or can suggest an alternative?

  2. Probably Chinese crank. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Thats what I though. I have sent them a mail asking for details of the components and will report back.

If I was in the market for a 383 short block has anyone got any recomendations?

I've had Larry's performance rebuild 2 engines. Neither a HAMB car but am still happy with their work after 3 years. The camaro was sold so no idea how that's doing, but they rebuilt a 302 for my 68 mustang. I brought it all the way down to LA from Northern CA and drove it straight home with no problems. Not sure where they get their stuff, but I'm still happy with the work done on my car! They had everything in their shop ...saw a bucket, a 50's vintage and a later model sedan type thing...some 90's vintage thing. Never had a probolem with the service.

To be quite honest Richard it is not too bad if it is part of a container.

The machining costs to just have the block taken to +30 and the crank to + 10 is not far off $700. Add a Summit $199 dollar rebuild kit would take the cost to not far off the cost of this kit.

So, Landed in Pounds to the UK this kit would be about £900, add a set of Patriot heads and the bits off my old engine and I have a 383 for £1400 which is what the cost of a crate 350 would cost.

Would be nice to hear from anyone who has used them as this is a very attractive deal from where I am sitting!

These cylinder heads feature a 65cc or 75cc combustion chamber with a 64cc exhaust port and a 3/4” thick head deck (ideal for nitrous or blower applications). Standard valves are lightweight 8mm 2.050 (comp package has 2.080) intake and 1.600 exhaust with AFR’s hardened ductile iron interlocking valve seats. The exceptional flow characteristics, ideal operating range of 2000 rpm to 6500 rpm, 23º valve angle, and standard valve spacing make this the perfect street head for 350 cid to 400 cid engines from 1955-86. Available for 1987 to present engines with center bolt valve covers and 2 center intake bolts at 72º angle. No special parts are required (see footnotes here). Dual valve cover bolt pattern is standard. Exhaust port is raised .100 over GM L98 cylinder heads.
    Note:

Hydraulic roller cams typically experience valve float at 6000-6200 rpm because of their fast ramp rates. AFR suggest you upgrade your springs to AFR part #8605, 1.290 O.D. with higher spring pressures and use our Patented “Hydra Rev Kit” to reduce chances of valve float associated with rpm 6000 or higher.
