San Diego Area HAMBers Without (Enough) Garage Space

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fadingfastsd, Sep 27, 2008.

  1. Hey San Diego HAMBers.

I've been rolling an idea around in my head for awhile, figured I'd see what everybody thought about it. I figure there has to be other guys with my same situation. At my current house I'm renting, I don't have a garage. I've got a 2 car carport, but with a boat in there and roomates, I just don't have enough room to work on the car as much as I'd like.

So I've been thinking, could we get a couple guys together in the San Diego area, and rent some space to set up our own shop?
I'm thinking find some small industrial area or something, and get us some room to work on projects (I need a place to work on my bikes too).

I don't really have any details put together yet, but is anybody interested in looking into this with me?

    Just throwing it out there...

    Evan

    FWIW

I do the same thing here in Austin, as does several groups of guys. It's a great idea. Just be sure to factor in what it REALLY costs to set it up- Lighting; electrical; etc... We kinda underestimated....

  3. Come on up to Ramona and buy my place 8 acres, 2800 square foot shop with mezzanine and 220...it's every hotrodders dream...we are moving to NC...make ya a deal...there is a guy here in Ramona with about 20 old chicken coops that was renting them out to guys like us but somebody complained to the county...typical

Be sure you're compitable with whoever you share expenses/space with as these deals can turn sour real fast!

  5. Sounds awesome.
Is there a house on it, or is it just land & shop?

    So no SD guys interested??

  6. It can be tough in So Cal to find industrial space that will rent to car folks. Insurance companies have started to try and weed them out, especially if the building isn't sprinklered. Then the landlord will make you get liability insurance, mine cost $875.00 a year for a 1500 ft shop. Also cities usually require a business license, or in some cases a "non business, business license" (hows that for city hall double speak). Electricity will run you $50.00 to $100.00 a month minimum. alltold, mine costs me about $1500.00 month.
Just some shit to take into consideration.

  7. shop, house, 150 gpm well, secondary well, approved for a second house, fully fenced, all useable land, awesome views, on the Poway end of Ramona (west end), over 1000 feet of rock walls...I hate giving up my shop and this location but North Carolina is in our family's future so I am sacrificing this one

Ken's house and garage set up is the cat's ass. Wish I had known about it two years ago.

  9. Man i might want to check that out.
I work in Poway, and am looking into buying a house in the next 6 months or so.
I'd definitely like to see it!

Maybe this weekend? Not sure what I have going on but I'd really like to check it out.

i was actually thinking about this - but a bit of a twist - a buddy of mine is a marine, and he told me about this thing on base called the hobby shop where all the guys go to wrench on their stuff - so Ive been thinking (and looking) about getting a space with some lifts, and setting up each bay with basic tools - and renting slots per hour/day or something - maybe an old car dealer or auto shop somewhere, but im in north north county

  11. Ya you're right on.
The more I think about it, thats the direction I was thinking of taking it.
I have buddies in the military who have told me about the 'hobby shops' they have access to on base too.
You could really turn this into a business!
I run www.DezertDimes.com, an S10/Sonoma prerunner site about building those trucks into desert offroad trucks. I have alot of guys on there in the San Diego area, who would be interested in having a fully equipped shop they could work on their trucks at. Theres alot of people out there, especially in San Diego & SoCal that just don't have the space to do the work they want at their own house.

for the auto hoppy shops you have to have current registration and insurance, but that shouldnt be a problem cuz you have to have that to get on base in the first place any way! the one on mainside of pendleton even has a parts store attached to it!

thats an idea...as long as a deposit was created for tools so things dont get broken or stolen....

as far as the sharing a shop idea goes...here in kansas a lot of folks do it successfully but problems arise when things become missing...

haha, be careful - im dangerous company!

yea, its one of those ideas ive had for a while - now ive thrown it to the wolves :')
fadinfst if you wanna throw some ideas around, lets talk - throw me a pm or somethin
yea, the details of all (depositis, insurance, blah blah) would all have to be part of the business plan, to me if it could be set up to just recoup the expenses, and have a place to keep our own projects going, in addition having a good place to throw ideas, etc it could really turn into something cool

  17. I was going through old threads and found this one, I'm wondering what came of the hobby shop idea or just getting a shop space with a couple of guys?

  18. I don't think anything was ever done on this in San Diego.
I'm still up for it though, I think it's a great idea.
