I cant keep stuff from rusting in the gararge, never mind on the road! I like to see the bare metal feature in Rodders Journal, shows off the craftsmanship, but I think paint makes more sense.
I agree with Sam, its Jimmy Shine's fault. After his truck started getting noticed bare metal rides started popping up all over.
i know of atleast one car previous to 1940 that was run in bare metal at the lakes, oiled down to keep from rusting pics on www.hotironclub.com
If your body work looks like this... by all means rock it **** to let people see it for a bit then paint it a glorious glossy color. Otherwise I find it just stupid. Stock bodies with no real bodywork, dumb...
Transparent aluminum has too been invented...............didn't you see Star Treck VI? P.S. bare metal looks like ****...........IMHO...........and it WAS NOT the "way it was done in the day".
I've always loved cars in bare metal...gives it that industrial look. My favorite is NealinCa's roadster pu...man, that ch***is of his looks great nekkid.
Not to hijack the thread but... Does anyone have problems with rust under clear powder coating? Like for a dash rail or something?
Bare metal is a little lame.. Especially with the advent of Brookville roadsters... I see guys running bare metal brookville bodies now, which just seems kinda 'Rat Rod-ish' too me... "Hey I'm going to get a perfect body new that needs nothing but a coat of paint.... And not paint it..." Here in Austin, things just rust too fast to mess around with bare metal... It's so much easier just to hit it with a light coat of primer after you're done for the day.
Now this I'd like to see...kindly explain exactly WHAT is a "bare metal PAINT JOB"...??? Sounds like a contradiction to me... R-
I don't see why SO MANY people get so worked up about why a car is not finished with paint. Constant comments about "when are you going to paint that" - "that really needs to be shinny" - "why bare metal" - "can't wait to see that one done" etc., etc, on, and on.... Why is a finished car so important to some people? To me, finished is boring as hell. That's like going to a funeral and saying "There, now he's finished!"
Ya just know some knucklehead read your post and is really thinkin' of doin it. On the subject of bare metal, I really dig lookin at a car that some true craftsman has m***aged laser straight without lead or plastic. The cars like that art true works of art. Whats funny is when ya see some cobbled together piece of **** that looks like it was worked over with a claw hammer in bare metal.
it's all jimmy shines fault. I think it looks pretty cool on many cars. it's one of the many trends that are popular these days.. it will fade away as new trends develope. remember turquoise with pink graphics? ... yeah. bare metal don't look so bad now does it.
If you have the time to rub on your car all the time good for you .But if you get caught in the rain or even worse some one sweats on it you are screwed .My 2 cents
Jimmy Shine? Who's that? Try Jimmy Smith, yeah, the GOOD LOOKING Jimmy! ....hahahahaaaa I did mine because, being the old farm truck it is, I wanted to absolutely get it down to it's base so I knew what was under all the layers of paint, I ran around town with it that way for a year or so, it wasn't a statement so much as a fun rest stop on the way to a more finished finish. I've got no problems with bare metal, until someone starts making like it's a legitimate option. Even then, if that's what you want, go for it. Who cares, no biggie. ....that poor, ugly Falschlehner kid, maybe he'll make it as a fabricator or something.....
During my 53 Burb build, my wife said how she hated that old ugly green paint. She said: We should strip that off. I said: We? If you want it off, you take it off. So she did. She stripped that whole suburban by herself. Afterward, while sitting on the patio looking at it, we decided, Hell, it looks cool, we'll leave it that way for awhile. No other motives, not to be like anyone, not to make a statement. I really never cared what anyone on a computer thought, or what anyone thought period. We just thought...Cool. Leave it. Whens the last time you saw a 53 Suburban in bare steel laying on the running boards?! Then we sold it. On to the next guy. He can paint it purple for all I cared.
Got any more pictures of your wife stripping............. the paint off, of course! Damned dirty minded fools.
