I have a '53 Cranbrook with a 218. I am actually getting fond of the old three on the tree, but I am sure my wife would rather have an auto, and I thought maybe I could do a little better on the gearing. I am thinking that I am close to needing a clutch, and if there is a modern automatic that will work I could swap? Thanks, CHAZ
you need to find a late '50's Plymouth with auto/flat six to get the easiest install. the flat six was used up into 1960 on economy minded "fleet" type cars, and lots of them had automatics. they'll be push****on controlled in stock mode, but they can be adapted to column or floor shift with some work. IIRC, the flathead was used in trucks way into the 60's but you won't find many automatics in those applications. they're all torqueflite trannies and easy to keep in operating order. don't mess with fluid drive or the semi auto boxes. they are an animal unto themselves and not great for rods. there may be some issue with the engine block/crank output flange if the donor car is a Dodge... but i just stepped beyond my knowledge and i'm sure there is someone to take the stage from here on.
Wilcap makes an adapter to mount GM transmissions behind the Mopar flathead. There's a late-40s Dodge business coupe in California that's running a 700-R4 behind a flat 6 using one of those adapters. The adapters aren't cheap, but they open up some options...
