    YIKES!!!

I keep thinking about a dual master cylinder (I am running 100% rebuilt stock brakes.) Now I am definitely thinking a little harder.

Glad to hear all is well!!!!

Wow, unreal. Thanks to a calm head, quick thinking, and lots of hours behind the wheel, you pulled this one out. Way to go !!! Glad you and Big Olds are safe.
Nothing like good friends in a pinch.
Is the Pile-Up still in your future ? Hope to see you there. Gary

My heart skipped a couple beats reading this cuz it happened to me about a month ago in my Chevy dually! Had new tires put on at Wally Mart and on the way home I hit the skids and nothing. Boy, that's a sorry feeling and if you don't keep your wits about you you're in real trouble. It wasn't WM's fault but we discovered the previous owner did some Southern engineering on the MC and the rod that connects to the pedal just fell out. $250 bucks later it's fixed.

Anyway, I can certainly relate to what happened and want to say you did a good job handling this even though you had all the other troubles but it could have been much, much worse. I'd get the entire system checked out now if you haven't already.

    Glad to hear you're OK!

Also depends on how hard you pull it.(that just sounds wrong) Slow and easy and you come to a nice stop. Hard and you lock 'em up, meaning no control. If you are in a panic I bet its going to be a all your might yank on the handle. Me I'd of ripped it out pulling on it. I like the downshifting idea also. The only thing is things happens so fast its hard to think, you just react.

    Glad your okay.

Just came in from the barn, great news as far as I'm concerned. The rear brakes were way out of adjustment. Less then 10 minutes on each side and my brake pedal is now stopping the rear brakes in about the same spot on the pedal as the front.

HUGE thanks to Scott for once again helping me with this issue and allowing Big Olds to hang out in his barn all week and take up so much space. Scott was also able to get the horn to work which it hasn't done in a few years AND he got the fuse panel cover back on which I was never able to do. He's my hero for the week:D

It was also very nice to be able to wash Big Olds then pull him inside to wipe down and detail, including the interior. Been along time since he's looked this dolled up.

For those that are attending the Ididit gig tomorrow, I'll see you there. Everyone else I'll see ya in downtown Morris next weekend or the GG Bowling Green event the weekend after.

I'm VERY excited Big Olds is road worthy again without too much h***le. Thanks to all for the concern regarding me and Big Olds' safety.

You really just want my room huh??:p
Yes, I'll be there. Arriving at approx 4pm on Friday afternoon. See ya there bud.

It makes me happy that this incident pushes you to the side of installing a duel master cylinder that works properly.

I'm really glad you weren't. If anything ever happened to you while riding in Big Olds...well let just say I don't think I could live with that.

I do not have one at this point BUT I will be looking at what is on Rusty Olds and probably robbing him of his for Big Olds this winter. In any event whether it be a used or new one I will install one this winter.

Scott and I have talked about this and will be investigating my brake pedal setup in general this winter.

It's sorted out for now sweetie. I'm still coming to visit in Nov. I can't p*** up the opportunity to hang out and party with my sock f@#ker pals.:D

I try to keep my love life and who I'm dating off the HAMB and have done a pretty good job of it over the last 6 years. I'll fill you in on some details in private at the Pileup.;)

Plan on it this winter now.

I actually thought I was going to go that route a few years ago but changed my mind. Big Olds will have a new wheel look this spring though.:D

Tis thread was a fascinating read, I'm glad your OK and the Olds is on it's way to getting well. If you hubs caps are re pops try bending the tabs out a little for a better bit on the wheel. If they keep coming off take them off on the fast freeway runs.

Gald that you and B.O. made it through OK. I think my blood pressure spiked while reading the no brakes episode, I'm sure that it seemed as if it was in slow motion and you have probably re-lived it over and over in you mind.

    Just a side note Denise,

If you keep losing the hubcap off the same rim ... it may be the rim ... not the hubcaps. I had a set of rims one time that one of the rims was just a tad too large ( where the hubcap fit ) and I could not keep a hubcap on it. I put that rim to use as a spare and installed the spare rim ... no more hubcap loss :D

Glad you and Big Olds are OK ...

Whew, that sounds like a close one. Glad to see that you were able to get stopped safely.

Even your stories that start out with a mishap or near mishap end up on a positive note and as usual make for some interesting reading.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I was going to say that calls for another brake and bike extravaganza. haha

  19. Fwiw, you can bend the brake shoe anchors in rear drum brakes if you lock them up via the emergency brake and go over some stutter bumps or the like.

Did that little trick on my 53 Ford.

Denise, glad you squeaked thru and hit no one! Don't want you or BO damaged, looking forward to meeting you when you show up in ATL before your arrival at Daytona.Told the guys from S.F.C.C. that wouild be my next breakfast with them last Sunday!
I think somehow hot rodders of my generation had an advantage impressed into us about depending on brakes. Hell, I was on my fifth car before I got away from mechanical brakes! ****, I KNEW that I had very little brakes and expected it every time I pushed the brake pedal!
To this day, I instinctly look for a hole before I hit the brakes because I expect the brakes to be no good! Nothing worse than expecting brakes that ain't there!
Any how, looking forward to meeting you down here in GA.

Been there; done that! How long did it take to get rid of the (adrenaline) shakes? My ride was backward down a steep climb in a Jeep now named "The Sphincter Shrinker", and was a front brakeline wearing thru combined with rear drums full of slimey mud.

So 'boys' poop and girls cry? I think you're just saying we're ****...

I'm happy you and BO are still in one piece.

Glad to hear everything is well now. I along with everyone else was hanging on the edge as I was following your story. As I was reading I was experiencing a wide range of emotions, we all know that vehicles are secondary when it comes to people. In this senario I wanted so much to learn that both of you are fine.

Again by and through your experiences we can learn from your sharing. I for one will not take for granted the little things I often do when preparing for my next trip. Thanks for sharing your happy photos with us as well your not so happy ones................:):)

I just saw your car last night in a magazine at the book store. hope it was Street Rodder, cuz the other magazines I looked at were O.S.R. and that other one that ****s.. can't even remember the name. Hillbilly Deluxe.. something like that.

The two that I know for sure that Big Olds is in this month is American Rodder (page 95) and the Goodguys Gazett (page 50). I don't get Streetrodder so unless I read it on the HAMB, I have no clue.

Thanks for all the kind words bud. Sharing so others can learn is my intent.

Am I going to see you at the GG Bowling Green event in a couple of weeks by chance?

    It seemed like forever.
Are you and your family haeding to the PileUp this weekend??

Looking forward to meeting you, hanging out and getting to know you too.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I will certainly be careful if/when I ever have to use it in an emergency situation.

I wish I had all the guys over to lean their knowledge and expertise. I'm thinking that maybe late this fall we can have another one to to fix the pushrod into the master cylinder....and of course ride the mini-bikes and go-cart.:D

No "mounds" allowed what so ever on my fatLuckys interior.:D

As long as most continue to find my stories interesting and worthwhile reading, I'll continue to share.

At first it was a couple different wheels that kept loosing the caps but after changing caps out the left front is the only one that keeps coming off, or did till now. It's been on for a couple hundred miles now so keep your fingers crossed I found a good cap for this exact wheel.

Yeah, it was the longest, slowest, scariest mile of my life.

    Looking forward to it bud.

They aren't repops and taking them on and off just about every time I take Big Olds out is not an option. I think I've got ones on each wheel now that are staying......we'll see:D

Yes I plan on scooting over to B.G. Sure hope to get to meet you!

I have caught Big Olds at several events but always seem to miss you. I'll look for you. I'll be in a '52 Chevrolet suede black panel truck.

Take care and I'm sure by then you'll have that nasty little habit of double pumping the brake pedal cured.:D
