If he's a "buddy" it shouldn't matter if ya spend a couple more hours or whatever. Bud's don't keep track of **** like that, ya just do it, period

If your doing a trade (for him doing some work on your house), why not just trade hour for hour? Sometimes you can just swap work even up, but when the other guy finishes in 4 hours and you spend a day, it can cause hard feelings. Stu

    Hey,
So what's your conseption of a "frenched headlamp"? An OEM headlamp
door tacked in place and mudded over, a complete reshaped upper fender
that will match the new shape of the door, when welded onto the fender,
a complete handbuilt door, hammerwelded or leaded into place, together
with the end of the fender that will require some reshaping to fit, well a
GM AD truck of this era?
A lot of ways to go, what will it require to please your client?

I agree. His life hours are worth the same as your life hours.

i think he wants to know how many hours "would be charged", so he can trade hours.

Sheesh..I don't think there is such a thing as a "straight answer" on the HAMB anymore.
Why is it that every time someone asks a question it turns into a debate or a question of judgement or ability, or something else. There are plenty of shop owners and freelancers on here that could answer this question. Wish I could help, but i've never had it done or done it myself so I don't know what is typically charged.

    In my area ...
shop time is around 45.00 to 65.00 a hour.....
carpentry work is around 35.00 to 45.00 a hour....
What does it cost in your area ?
I would figure it that way.............

    Hey,

This isn't a case of anyone's "judgement or ability", but one of clear and
direct communaction! If his client expects to get "black-lacquer-perfect"
metal and paint, because in his mind, that's the type of woodwork he
does, and instead gets "quick-and-dirty" because the rest of the vehicle
is pretty much a POS, and the guy doing the work sees it as such, there
is gonna be a problem! Most/all barter jobs I've ever been involved with,
that when south, did so because of miscommunacation, and differences
of expectations. Make sure both parties know and understand what they
can expect, and will be getting for their efforts. No value judgements on
    skills/ability implied, here!

Yeah, I think i'll just have to clear up what exactly he's expecting, and let him know what im expecting...really. Thanks for all the advice guys.....

call a local shop that does this type of work. even at $50 per hour thats $350 a day! custom "metal work" done correctly is time consuming and time is $$$$. i used to think the metal fab guys i knew were slow until i viewed the end result done that would last the life of the car. "kustom done right costs!"
