today i went with a friend to look at a 52 chrysler 2 door hardtop.its a decent car in fair condition.he's going to pick it up tomorrow,i just wanted to see some other 52 chryslers already fixed up.havent seen many around .so lets see all those mopar customs.and any info on engine swaps and disc brake kits would be greatly appreciated.also where are the good places to find parts?thanks
I wish I had some pictures to post for you my girl has a 52 Plymouth and I have been doing allot of research on these cars for her try thins for disk brakes there are others but I just had this link handy http://www.mpbrakes.com/products/search-results.cfm on the subject of engine swaps you can fit any small block in there you want or even a 331 hemi from what I have found if you want to go with a chrysler small block you need 340 exhaust manifolds on the driver side to clear the steering linkage I think the manifold you need is off of a dart but not too sure the heater box with the blower motor in it needs to go you can find something at the junk yard to retrofit into your car so you have heat that will go under the dash. you need to clear the firewall and trans tunnel a bit it looks like you can just use a bfh to do the job there. If you need any info just feel free to pm me and I will do some diggin for yah.
theyve got a ****load of potential - im biased with anythig mopar tho - obviously - was it a windsor or...? someone will have pics - ill look for some
thanks for the help soo far.but there has to be people with pictures of their chryslers(chopped, dropped, shaved, whitewall, skirts).lets see some pix
Hi, I got this thread running which has also been a little slow. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298815 One guy refered me to; More info at: http://imperialclub.com/Yr/1951/Club...2475_small.JPG Seems like an OK site. Good luck
Not sure the exact year, but I did this a while back for someone. I think these cars have m***ive potential.
I've got a cool Mopar, it is a '49 dodge wayfarer, lots of custom work done on the front end and rear end, I'm definitely changing the color. It's powered by a 350 chevy and the front end is a torsion bar graft. I've been trying to get someone to photoshop it in a maroon or burgandy, no luck so far.
Can't scan it, but Tex Smith's Mopar Hot Rod book has a 51 Chr 2 dr in it. Chopped & a lot of dechroming. Painted black. Looks good!
I can understand why you want to lose that paintjob! Here it is in a maroonish sort of color... I have a couple of other suggestions too, if you want my 2cents. I´d lose the lakes pipe - not because I don´t like them, but because it adds height to the body, which is in any case strangely tall on these cars. You could also add some chrome to the sides, as this also helps reduce visual height. The same goes for bumpers - some nice chrome bumpers would give you more length, and also set off the paint. The grill also seems a little shapeless without any kind of frame. Maybe consider adding one?
Here's my '52 Coronet. Heated the front springs and 3" blocks in the rear. It's all stock with a Holley/Weber 2 bbl. Will be choppin' the roof and droppin' in a 5 speed as soon as the snow flies.
Here's a coupe of links that might be hepful. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4022&highlight=mopars http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=284213
The only pic i can get to post is the one on the avitar. I gotta figure out how to do the photoshop or whatever it is. It is a 49 plymouth I chopped 4 inches, pie cut the front fenders and lowered the core supt mount 3 inches, it has a chopped down 38 chrysler split rear window in it. Welded the 2 piece hood together. Runs a 350/350 combo with an 8" ford rearend. Did all the work myself with the help of my son. Bud
yeah i thought it was pretty nice especially for 500 bucks. If he didnt buy it i wouldve even though i have nowhere to put it.
I just saw this post after spending a few hours cleaning up the shop today. Found this tucked away along with a 1958 Imperial service manual. Never owned a Chrysler and can't remember WHERE they came from...
Engine wise, I would keep the 331 hemi. But this is where it gets complicated. The early Chryslers 51-53, and some 54 New Yorkers came with the extended tail (integral bell housing). This makes going with another transmission somewhat difficult. If you are lucky to find a 54 New Yorker engine and transmission, it will be mated with Powerflite 2 speed. In 1954, Chrysler changed the long tail to a short tail engine. Each engine had a different way of mating to the Powerflite, but the good news is that the cast iron torqueflite (56-61) will bolt up in place of the Powerflite. In conclusion, look for a 54 engine and transmission. (A 55 engine and trans will work too.)
