Workin on a 36 Ford, and need to pull the tank out, but it looks like the tank is put on the frame before the body is put on the car. (Sandwiched between the body and the frame) Is this the case?? Any help, um,, would help big time! Thanks!

Yep, you need to pull the body to pull the tank.

I made a big access cover in my '35 rear floor when I did the whole floor. So far I've had to open it up twice in six years for fuel or gas gauge problems.....glad I did it.

  7. The tank on my 36 5w coupe pulled easily.
It's got parallel leafs with a '64 Olds rear end stuck in back.
I loosened the tanks bolts disconnected the fuel filler neck hose, wiggled it up as high as I could force it up, then I bent the left side flange up a little bit ,then elevated the right side and pulled it out, left side FIRST.
Yes,the flange took a little twisting but didn't really get hurt much.
I replaced the shitty steel one with a poly tank.
    Same drill.
Pushed it in at a steep angle, used a wide flat pry bar to flex the flange a bit and it suddenly popped right into it's nest.
Had the whole job completed in one summer afternoon in my driveway with a borrowed gas buggy and 4 sturdy jack stands.
    Body never left the frame.
I think you're right though. They build 'em with the tank mounted to the frame and then they do a body drop.
The wide smooth and flat pry bar is my easy button!

yea,i took mine out without pullin the body.took alot of thinking but it came out.

  9. Pulled one on a 36 tudor no sweat. Reinstalled no sweat. Back off the pipe that holds the filler neck in place and loosen the mounting bolts. Move the whole thing to the left and down it came. I have some of the lead neck sealing washers left if you need one.

This was my first post, and I gotta say that this board rules! Bearer of bad news, but dam!! Thanks everybody! This is a neat car, was done back in 58 and sat since 62. 8BA, duals, and a real tuck and roll, white and red gut. This client is lucky!

I took the tank out of my 36 3 window without removing the body or floor.Dissconnect the fuel outlet pipe, take off the filler neck and remove the bolts holding it in to the frame...took a bit of jiggery pokery but it came out and went back OK.

I seem to recall a big bust-up on the Fordbarn forum regarding Bob Drake's repro tanks being not quite the same size as the original, and that extra 1/4" meant you do have to lift the body to get the new tank in.

Yeah, that is something to think about. The client is going to have the tank restored, that is all I know, which is good because I know I can put it back in. Once again, thanks for the help, and the HAMB rocks!
