We were shooting the shat about old car movies last weekend after watching a copy of Two Lane Blacktop my son downloaded, and the subject came up about a movie that we remeber the ending of but not much more.
So the ending ....these guys go drag racing with a motor stolen from a cop car and put into a 40 Willys......... what was the name of that movie, its been making me crazy.

  6. I wonder what happened to the Willys? How did you get the Olds? Did you have the black primered 42 Willys from Kentucky? When the Willys is done, I wanna race ya with the Fiat.

Olds came from California. Black primered Willys came from New Hampshire, before that? There were three Willys, or more?, used to make the movie. One still races and is now yellow and prostreet. Another was crushed. Don't know about the third.

Cool Movie, Parnel Roberts was the Cop (Adam in Bonaza, and Trapper john MD) The cop car engine was a Hemi. Might just have to see if it is avaliable.

  15. Yep ... HOT ROD (a.k.a. Rebel of the Road) ... a full-length feature film that was produced by ABC Circle Films and originally aired on Broadcast Television May 25, 1979 as the ABC Friday Night Movie (of the week.)

The fictitious "Lyons Drag Strip" racing scenes were all filmed at Fremont Drag Strip ... and I'm pretty sure the Willys was a Fremont based car ... I remember it parked on a street near my house (w/o the engine):

Here's a (very lame) dragstrip scene from the movie:

NOTE: the starter is Chet Carter (long-time starter at Fremont & Baylands)

I believe one of the cool line in that movie is "nothing comes out of the whole like a pre-war willys" haven't seen it in about 20 years so i may be wrong

It never gets old, but Mommy hates it. :D

I think the Willys in the movie became the yellow drag car in the 80's known as "HOT ROD WILLYS". ....and yeah, was a regular at Fremont. At least that's what my impressionable mind remembers from reading Street Rodder.

MY favorite movie of all time, I like the line in the movie,

Blow it up with a 4 barrell, then go to 2 -4's,
Blow it up with 2- 4 barrels, Then Inject it,
Blow it up with injection, Then supercharge it!

Upon completion of our build, the primer gray Willys will be debuted at Back to the 50's, then it will be offered for sale. Your Topo would be welcome as a trade-in

  27. Jeem ... According to the 41 Willys from the movie "Hot Rod" thread (click HERE), there were three (3) different Willys used to film the movie ... and Steve Castelli bought one of them for his yellow HOT ROD WILLYS drag car.

Thanks now I have to go onto ebay and find the movie for auction or a web site that has it for sale.
I've never heard of this movie or seen it, looking forward to it. I've been out in the cruising lanes and didn't notice the hot rods flying by..............:D
