Let me guess. CTR member? Yes, I had this happen before. Except he didn't even tell me until I showed up to pick up the car. I bought a non running, but mint 84 Z28. I gave him a 50% deposit and he said he would keep it in his garage as long as I'd like. Well I came back not even a week later and he says "oh sorry, I had to get rid of it right away so I sold it to someone else" He had my phone number, he had my address, I only live a half mile away. Then it took me about a month to get my money back. I had to get it from his wife.
If you were in Ct. I know for a fact you could get a whole shit storm going on this!Proving a verbal contract might be hard but if he gave you any kind of paper proving he took your money he can get arrested for "theft of a motor vehicle"even though it's "his "car the new buyer can get arrested for possession of stolen goods.I know this first hand one of my relatives bought a car not knowing that the seller had taken a deposit on it already cops came after him with the possession charge. The only thing that saved him is during the investigation it was found that the guy took several deposits on it waiting for the best offer with that evidence the guy who filed the complaint asked the cops not to arrest him as none of the guys with deposits knew of the other deposits on it either and I was there when all this happened it's not a friend of a friend deal
i say go pound on his door and get your deposit back , then punch him in the fuckin neck! yeah i know i need to work on my social skills but thats all i got!
That is a good idea... maybe there is also a lawyer here on the hamb ask him to wright him a letter... but for now.. just add. his telefon email and home adress here on the hamb...
The POS seller probably, like most of us, and you know this well, has a number of unlicensed vehicales on his property. As you know FoMoCP, the local government can be a huge pain. The great thing about Il. is you can file a complaint, the government can't reveal your identity and will act on your complaint as though you are an affected neighbor. A report to the secretary of states office about his selling vehicles he never paid sales tax on (any titleable vehicle that's not in his name) will keep him busy and under scrutiny for some time also. Remember that as a wheelin, dealin car guy, his worst nightmares are the same as yours. Just so it doesn't feel like you're hiding, ask him how it felt to get f)%^&!d back after he has had to clean his act up. It sucks to jack with a guy like that, but the stupidity of this country's civil system allows people to screw others around with no fear of response. 50 years ago, he risked getting his ass beat for such behavior. Now he'll have you arrested and sue the crap out of you for so much as a verbal confrontation.
