I was wondering if anyone had pics of one of those ol' O2 air tanks mounted in it's stock location on a plane?? Where was it mounted at and how?? You can also through in how you mounted it on your rod also.. But would like to see how they where mounted in the planes... -COS
No pics, cause I haven't bothered to take any of O2 tanks yet. But in the P-51 and T-6 they were mounted horizontally aft of the ****pit. Some versions of the T-6 had them running longitudinally just behind the back seat. Other models had them mounted transversly back in the tail cone, accessible through the "hell-hole" . Mustangs also mounted them longitudinally behind the fuselage fuel tank. The Skyraider has a bottle mounted vertically in the service bay located below the ****pit. Can't remember where the Corsair mounted it O2, its been a long time since I was crawling around in one of those... All used some type of clamp ***embly either around the bottle or on the end. This all varied according to mfg. Some were akin to a hose clamp and others use aluminum straps that hold the bottle into padded aluminum or micarta saddles. Basically, they were mounted where-ever and how-ever there was space available.
Look around on Google image, searching bombers like B-17 and "interior" or such. Bombers contained a mounted tank for each crew position or sometimes a huge tank for ****pit crew, and various walkaround arrangements too. The tanks used to be common at flemarkets, usually with an air hose from use on a wrecker; I suspect some I saw used an original braket as part of the rig.
A little off this topic, but if you go the "shorpy" and search atomic welding, you will see a picture of them being made.
