Hot Rods Pic Request....1932 NON Ford hotrod coupes.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SinisterCustom, Sep 30, 2008.

  1. Yup...that was a Chrysler Corp styling trick to give the cars a longer hood line and give the impression of a bigger car. Really neat eye/mind trick.

Yeah, well what ever it is, it sure is purdy. I guess maybe he uses '32 since it's built on deuce rails and the cowl. Love the car, in fact that car has set the bar for Non Ford early coupes.

Actually I took that picture of a fellow club member's 32 DeSoto. He was also a HAMBer at one time when he lived in OK. He says the grill is from a Plymouth but the body is a DeSoto. I've seen photos of other 32 DeSotos and they do have a different front end and a divider bar on the windshield, but could that have been replaced with one piece glass? Who knows, I'm no "expert" like Mr Weasel.

Im not as familar with chevys as ford are those grill original on your post they look very close to a 32 ford grill. Was a 32 chevy that close to resemblance.

Well a '32 CHevy is definitely a different animal from a '32 Ford and a '31 Chevy. Meaning if you sit them next to each other ('32 Chevy and '32 Ford) the similarities are that they both lost their visor that year and contain similar body line that marks the front of the window frame. Both started using Cowl vents also in that year as well as doing away with the Nickle/Chrome plates grille shell. The Ford grille shell is rounded off and much more refined looking as well as the body as a whole. From my understanding the '32 Ford also gained another 2 inches in the height of the body making the driver sit "lower" then in Model A's. I am pretty sure that Chevy did not redesign the body as whole but rather lost the visor and rolled the head panel above the windshield to create a fresh look for the 1932 year. Like I said definitely different animal but I think both companies were taking cues from each other at that time, it just so happen that Ford made the better looking car. Not that I would give my car up......unless you are offering me a '32 Ford :D. But I wouldn't trade for a Model A.

This one could definitely pass as a Ford if it drove by fast enough. One thing to look for is the fact that the Chevy Windshield will not have a Chromed or Painted frame. In fact there is no frame to speak of. The frame will also tip you off. While the Chevy frame that year is great and way better looking then a model a frame, it's no '32 Ford. Firewall is sort of flat on Chevys and does not remove itself like the Ford counterpart. Lastly the drip rail on a chevy will continue to follow the contour of the window and meat the other line that runs the length of the body where the Ford separates itself and flows into the deck.

This particular '32 Chevy has a '32 Ford Grille which really looks nice but is also not original.

    Another DeSoto .....

The windshield looks flat with a thin divider bar. Two pieces of glass or just extra chrome added for looks?

I notice 32 Ford grilles ending up on some of these Chevys, and it makes sense- Its just the best looking grill of the bunch- Period.
I think a strong reason for 32 - 34 Ford's popularity with rodding (besides the sheer number of them) is the transverse leaf suspension in the front- You don't need big 'ol frame horns to hold parallel leaves in front of the grille. Keep the car looking more compact and tidy when your running fenderless.
