Welding stainless trim parts

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 46international, Oct 10, 2008.

  1. Can anyone give me some ideas on welding stainless trim? Can you gas weld it with some type of stainless filler rod?
    Thanks for any help

if you have a mig you can get stainless wire from your local welding supply store. They say you should use a different gas mixture but I have had good success with the gas setup I normally use with the stainless wire. It grinds nice and buffs excellent.

I asked this same question awhile back. Several people said to tig weld with special mix of gas and use a scrap piece of your trim as filler rod.

  4. Great, thanks "Homemade" I do have a mig. I'll try that. Thanks again

  5. "Ledsled" I don't have a tig welder, I was thinking that maybe gas welding with a piece of scrap as filler would work but I may need some type of flux or shielding gas, don't know.

Are you talking obout the window trim or cuustomizing side trim? The window trim will be more forgiving than a thick piece of side trim. I'm in the process of finding someone to redo mine. One stainless restorer that I spoke to, who incidentally doesn't weld the trim, made mention of creating a copper buck to allow the heat to dissipate and absorb evenly. I also second using a junk piece of the same side trim to create welding rod so that the color/tone remains as close as possible.
