May come off as a dumb question, but... I'm in the middle of the re-wire job on my '54 Merc, and I'm at the stage where I'm doing the dash (yeah... fun). I'm having the damndest time getting the light switch and ignition switches out. I've got it tore apart to where it seems like the light switch will come out behind the dash if only I could remove the knob so the ***embly can be pulled through the hole... I don't even know where to start on removing the face plate so the ignition switch can be pulled out. I see no set screws holding the knobs on, nor do they seem to unscrew. I don't want to start destroying stuff trying to get these out... Any experience on this out there? Thanks in advance! ~Steve
on the back of the light switch. there is a small pin with a spring. press it in at the same time pull on the knob. the pin is what locks the light switch rod in place. push the ign switch from the back at the same time twisting it to the left. it has a spring pressure on it thats why you have to press it.
Thanks low springs... I'll stop tearing what's left of my hair out, and give that a wirl tomorrow. I woulda never figured that out, and suprisingly my shop manual doesn't cover it. Thanks again!
If the ignition switch is anything like the 54 ford, you need a special tool to get it out. It also works on all the other bezels, including the light switch after you get the knob out. Its not expensive (6.95) and Concours Parts in Nevada has them. Shipping will probably cost you more that the tool. Catalogue # is A-10. They work great and don't screw anything up.
Getting the ignition switch out isn't a problem. But there is a tube/spacer kind of thing on the back. Getting it back in will do whats left of your (and my) hair in completely!
