Super Modifieds verse Modifieds

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SpeedyPAt, Oct 10, 2008.

  1. Ah Rich, don't forget the Super Speedway modifieds of Evans, Cook, Troyer, Hendricks and others. Boy, do I miss watching them run Dover and the 2.5 Pocono track!

Emil ! I'm disappointed in you! The only thing I liked about Super Speedway mods was Richie Evans kicking the big boys asses at Daytona!

Next thing is you'll be saying you liked it when they ran them on the Daytona and Watkins Glen road courses !

  3. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllll................. they were our boys, weren't they?
Ok, ok, nothing like fenderless on bull rings. I agree. But those mods on SSs were running faster then Cup cars were.

  4. Evans chassis' had a heck of a rep. Jimmy Champine and Swede Savage were my heroes. North east supers are enough fun that Tony Stewart visited Oswego a few years back. McKnight and...who's the guy from Maine that comes to Oswego all the time?
Man I miss Oswego...until about January.:)

Don't the east coast and west cost guys get together at least once a year?
    Silver King...?

this is a great thread .i spent a season in a southern mod ,but a super mod would be jus tits up. but i have to be happy with my 360 sprinter o well.:D

  7. Just had to throw these pics in for those who don't understand the fascination with these things. It used to be there were no engine or chassis rules on the supers, so we ended up with some "interesting" ideas.

Guy Chartrand drove this TWIN TURBO'd late hemi powered rig in 1972. Supposedly made 2000hp.

Then there was the Ken Reece "3 to 1" car... Built in 79 and tested by soon-to-be stock car legend Tim Richmond.

Hmmm...if you put the two together... YIKES!

SuperMods are the baddest, Oswego Speedway is their home. I helped on Irish Jack Murphy's car in maybe '67 or '68, it had a gurney-westlake 289 rear engine motor. They tried to run them for a couple years but tradition prevaled and they went back to the roadster style but exotic as all hell. Wicked pieces of work.

Hey Ex; who can forget the King of Super Modifieds - Jim Shampine. The rear engine car was banned, otherwise it would have obsoleted all of the east coast supers! He was an incredible innovator.

  11. The rear engine cars came and went at Oswego for years without any real success. Then in 79 Jim Shampime showed up with this thing
    [IMG]

and that was it. RE cars were banned thereafter.

As a side note, flagging car counts on the west coast have led to RE cars being allowed to race out there again. As of yet, none have come out of hibernation, but I can't wait to see what happens next season.

They had rear engine cars that late? My memory may be a bit off, it was a while back. Shampine was the man to beat, no question. I recall the road into Oswego is called Shampine Drive i think. Been way too long since i've been there, left in '72 maybe? Wish i had a picture of Murphy's car, white with shamrocks on the side, had a special nose like and indy or F1 car for photographs and a short one for racing. Helluva machine.
Thanks for bringing this topic up.

  13. The Classic in '82 was a sad weekend indeed.
I still go back from time to time.
I love the smell of methanol in the infield.
Who else was there the night Dwayne (The video guy) got chased over the infield guardrail by the car bouncing off of turn one? 92-95 time frame.
    Zoom out...zoom out...zoom out....run like hell!!
My brother and I were standing on the other side of the guardrail.

They still have them, Gibson has run this one within the last few years. Probably legistated to where it's not too competitive though.

Wow there is some wicked safety in that 3 to 1 car! Super narrow cage and a tire almost rubbing the driver elbow when he's just relaxed!!! Tapping the wall could be like sticking your arm in the exhaust shoot of your lawn mower!!!

Ya but there are others that won more than once... Your right though as anyone that can even get in 500 laps is tough and lucky... Thats my favorite race of the year...

4-5 years ago he raced the Silver Crowns here at Pikes Peak Intl., a 1 mile paved oval, qualifying about mid pack. About 2/3 the way through the race, turns 1-2 got super slick and greasy so everybody else was just tippy-toeing through. BW just stayed on the gas and picked up about 10-12 spots going slideways. I then became a Bentley Warren fan.

  27. That car was actually built in the 70s and extensively updated a few years ago. Oswego ran a "run what ya brung" race that allowed the RE cars. I believe that was the only one that showed, and it had mechanical problems. RE cars are not allowed in any reegular supermod series in the eastern US.

Yeah, I think I read where it was a old Hite car that Gibson reworked.

  29. That's the series I was trying to think of.

I watched Bently tear some shit up at the little 500... he is a good driver but he had some rough laps at anderson... He would get way out front then hit the wall jon the back strech and flatten the right rear. He sure was entertaining though... Doug heveron put on a hell of a show this year. till he crashed..
