Winterizing Rochester 2G Triples:

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rocket hot rod, Oct 11, 2008.

  1. Ok in about a month it is going to be time to put the Rod away for the winter. This year I installed a newly rebuilt Rochester carb set and I want to winterize them properly so I don't have any issues next Spring.

On my old bikes I put Stabil in the gas tanks, run it into the carb, and run the Carb dry of fuel. On the car I can do that with my center carb, but how do I run my two end carbs dry of fuel??? I checked for drain screws in the bottom of the bowls but there appear to be none.

Is there anyway to perform this task without taking anything apart? If not, how do you winterize your multi-carb setups?

    Your help is much appreciated.

PS. I have an electric fuel pump.

    Winterize?

The only thing I winterize is my boat. And that doesn't even happen until late Nov... ;)

Try driving it on clear dry days, that is winterizing as I see it.

I have a tripower Rochester setup; in the fall I put Stabil in my tank and drive it around for a while before I put it away for the winter, but I don't drain the carbs. It's not really that long until spring - your car will sit for what, four or five months? If it were put away for years it would be one thing, but a few months won't hurt anything. I wouldn't worry about it much.

However, when you start it for the first time in the spring, make sure to open the hood and watch the carbs for the first minute or two...sometimes one of the carbs will get a stuck float and gas will start pouring out on the engine. It's not a big deal, just rap on the carb with a screwdriver handle, or pop the top of the carb off to unstick it.

If upper New York is anything like Minnesota in the winter time, the roads have a coat of salt on them that doesn't get washed away until after the spring rains come....even on sunny dry days, you'll see a cloud of salt dust in the rear view mirror as you go down the highway. Not the best environment for an old car. ;)

I will second that winter condition with MN roads...

I hate when I have to work on my cars in the winter... the whole undercarriage is covered with a layer of salt...

You have a boat? Is that why you can't pay me the money you owe me?!

  8. Upstate New York roads are salt covered from late-November through early-April so no driving my car till the salt is gone.

Many years ago I left gas in the carb of my old Panhead over the winter and in Spring I had a clogged jet. Pulled the carb and cleaned it good and made sure I never stored any motor over a winter with gas in it. As long as I drained the gas I never had a problem again.

Always thought that Stabil was just a gimmick. Maybe I'll try it this year and see how I make out.
