Well got bad news today! Freightliner truck manufacturing plant in portland Oregon has announced they will close the plant in july of 2010. After 16 years of my life i have to enter the job market. One more example of a amercian company moving for cheaper labor, god bless the usa.

I think Freightliner is owned by the Germans.

Sorry to hear that. Here,Fleetwood is closing their RV plant (not surprisingly) with 350 out of work. At least you have a bit of warning and can look around. Best of luck.

I think Daimler owns Freightliner. Can't keep up with the mergers anymore.

General Motors had announced the closing of the Janesville WI. plant, scheduled for 2010 also. Yesterday they said because of poor sales the plant will close Dec. 23 2008. Merry xmas??

Wifey works @ TRW Automotive (antilock brake stuff), work is steady for now but rumor is - January.... If they don't have custumers lay-offs are very likely. SE michigan like many other areas is NOT a place to be in the auto industry.

Speaking as an airline mechanic I can only say "Welcome to the club" Hard to believe Freightliner is going off shore though. Where is the work going or are they just slowing down?

Sorry to hear that! I'm sorta in the business and know of some big engine emission laws coming out in 2010.. I wonder if that had anything to do with the closure. Either way.. it doesn't help the regular folks like us! Sorry again.

    i hear you brother

  21. We found out through an email, which was in response to the fact that Yahoo Business had it on their website BEFORE they made the "official" announcement here in the STATES!!! They made the "official" announcement in Germany this morning, which is 6 (?) hours ahead of EDT.

It's the 4th time in 5 years I get to face it. And people laughed when I said "there's gonna be layoffs" because Daimler had the first open house at the Redford Detroit Diesel plant in a number of years. The same thing happened to me at Williams International.

All I can do is laugh, it hurts too much to cry. Sorry to all my fellow "brothers" in Portland and St. Johns, ON.

But, Hell, as long as we are on this side of the gr***, it isn't that bad, is it?

Did some PR work for a wheel company in the 70's that had a plant in Mexicali. On the way to the facility, we p***ed a Kenworth plant and a Schalge (sp?) lock plant. A lot of companies went from the USA to Mexico, to China and now back to Mexico due to transportation costs.

A lot of high performance and custom accessory companies moved off, shore to avoid strict EPA rules, not labor costs.

    Glmke and others,

I feel bad for y'all! I've been there twice in two years.

2003 - West Pharmaceutical Services in Kinston, NC goes up in smoke, along with my job. Took 16 weeks to find another.

2005 - The Worker's Comp Insurance company I was working for made a "business decision" to lay me off after 2 years. Found out a year later they were going under and the top managers and owners were facing Federal charges!

Worked for 2+ years as an ***istant parts manager at the local cycle shop. Finally got the opportunity to get back to Engineering a year ago!

All this to say.......Yes it sets you back, but with a little determination and a lot of patience, you can get back to your feet, not just your knees!

Godspeed and good luck! Keep your chin up, things will turn around! Just keep the faith!
