    Look for Team Taco from Elkhart Lake WI. 1954 Oldsmobile int he original class.
    Owned by my brother and driven by him and three others on his team. 4th place last year and looking to move up this year with fresh drive train. Consider the tow from Wisconsin to southern Mexico just to take the green flag.....
    I'd be there except for a torn achilles.

    Also there is a great video from back a few years ith two guys from Pink Floyd in which they campained a Jag replica. Great tunes for background.

    I really enjoyed Clyde Morter a fine gentleman racer and his crew. Since that race he has invited me back east to race with them at Elkhart which he is very involved with. Here is an article I wrote about him and his car #421 "The Lucky Taco" way back when...

    In the 1954 race Bill Von Esser from Chicago entered a new Corvette in the Mexican Road Race.

    It was not what you would call a success. It was a DNF with a thrown rod early in the race, but it is noteworthy. It was the first Corvette to race in international competition.

    Do any of those old books or mags have any photos or info on this car? If you know anything further about this car or its history, please post it or send me a pm.

    Clyde has mentioned you. He is leaving tomorrow from Elkhart Lake. John and He will be joined by two new guys. I'd love to be there with all you guys but tore myself up over the 105th HD aniversary weekend. John has put a lot of work in the car for this year....Don't think they will catch you though!

    Speaking of Vettes you should have seen the one burn to the ground last year. He was trying not to let me pass and he lost it and spun and the car caught the edge of a tree and then flipped into a field and burnt to the ground. (Literely) The got out and only suffered some burns. If that wasn't bad enough, on the way back as he was towing his burnt frame (all that was left) he lost control of his tow rig and crashed his new trucka dn the trailer. I sure wouldn't want to have been him when he got home... "So tell me Honey... How'd things go?"

    I have been watching this post just waiting to see mention of Von Esser and his legendary corvette. its hard to believe him and Ernie actually drove the car to mexico to race it.:eek::eek::eek:

    For what it's worth, love the thread and the great comments. I am leaving in the morning with Hershel McGriff and on our way to Mexico for the beginning of this years La Carrera Panamericana. I'll try to keep in touch if possible but last year when we ran this race getting on-line was difficult at best.

    Don't know if this car was a real Carrera racer currently or in the past, nor do I know whose it is, but he cruised through the Throttlers show Sunday afternoon. Looks pretty real to me.

    You bet that's the real thing. That's my friend Ron Lee and that is a very rare Curtis. Here is some on the car and some of Ron's collection at one of his partys this year. He will also be racing in this years race with either that very car or a custom built hot rod he is building just for this race which is similar to the style of A.K. Miller.

    Man alive, Herschell McGriff is one of my all time heros!! And to drive the 49 Olds from Oregon to Mexico , run and win the race in his category, fix a big ass hole in the oil pan and drive it back home. Now if that isn't cool, nuthin is!! He was just a good old farm boy that had a Rocket with 6-ply tires and a knowledge of bumpy old dirt roads. Spec-fuckin-tacular!!~~~Viva Mexico~~~Sololobo

    Hershel and I just got back from Mexico where we stayed for a week visiting with many of the teams while they had a 2 day stop over in San Miguel de Allende. If anyone is interested in any photos let me know and I'll post some.

    You should have seen the looks on guys faces when I introduced Hershel McGriff to them let alone when Hershel would sign their cars for them. Several of them said, "As far as I'm concerned now that I got to meet McGriff I'm ready to go home." Hershel really enjoyed himself and really took time to visit with every one of them.

    Cool, I saw a 55 Olds that looks like it was built for something similar in L.A. last week awaiting shipping to Sweden from memory.... stripped out interior, big non rocket engine, alloy wheels etc looked like it would be a bit of fun to drive.
