the rear of my 31 coupe had no body mounts behind the seat area and i was wondering if this is tipical or do you guys have body mounts behind that point, my body was real flimsy so i made a subframe out of 1.5x120wall round tube that folows the curve of the deck lid and has a couple tabs that mount where the rear quarters bolt to the piece below the deck lid and it is 100 percent better, but i was just wondering how you guys do this
    pics would be nice

    thanx jason

well its was a hole in the subframe that had a bolt to the frame at the cross member and a wooden block or something

The original rear body mounts were on the bumper bracket extensions. People used to just cut them off flush with the body or even leave them sticking back a few inches and mount a nerf bar on them.

Are those round tubes the only support/protection for your tank and rear body?
I'd be worried about cracks forming with that much weight flexing around...not to mention the safety aspect.
MY car, I'd have a full on frame extension added in for safety and durability.

Model A coupes had 6 pair of body to frame bolts, Firewall, A pillar, each of the three subframe crossmembers (mid door, B pillar, front of wheel well) and in the subframe at the middle of the wheelwell. All except the firewall used wood blocks between the subframe and the frame.

What I was referring to in my earlier post is that there is another set of body mounting points at the very rear of the body, on the rear BODY crossmember. These bolts go into the bumper brackets. Since the bumper brackets get removed by most rodders most people don't even know this mounting point exists. These sit another 18" or so behind the rear frame crossmember.

Yeah, but even the cars without bumper brackets STILL have the subframe to support the body.
At the very least, this needs an addition to the current frame to provide support and protection.
Do a HAMB search for Littleman's "Deaths Doorstep" to get a good idea of the kind of strength required for that area and do something along the same lines...even if you just add straight/mitered sections of tube with no decorative holes.

Personally I wouldn't drive that car in traffic right now. A simple fender-bender will crush that tank like a beer can.
Man...potentually burning to death at the whim of some stressed out soccermom/cellphone jockey just scares the **** out of me.
I'd MUCH rather the original cowl tank then what you have there!

Best part is that designing and adding some solid reinforcement shouldn't be very hard at all...and the car looks great so its really worth the bit of time you'll spend!

    You'll get it fixed up!!!
